Seems the Fins owner veto'd the KO trade because he is tired of backup QB's starting for Miami.

A highly placed club source familiar with Stephen Ross’s thinking told The Herald that Ross wants to avoid the continued use of a "caretaker" quarterback and has grown tired of starting QBs who are better suited as backups.

A team source confirmed it was Ross who shut down the proposed Kyle Orton trade from the Broncos during the offseason.

“Orton is a nice quarterback,” the source said. “But he’s not a franchise quarterback, and we weren’t going to pay him like one when he isn’t one.”

Bottom line is Orton wanted to be paid franchise money and Miami knew he wasn't franchise material.

Miami probably could have benefited in the short term by landing Orton, but as we all know too well here, Orton would have doomed them to continued mediocrity.

Smart move by Miami as they are looking to draft a franchise QB and get an elite coach next year. They are struggling mightily right now, but they will certainly benefit in the long term by not pulling the trigger on this deal.

Smart guy.

This confirms what we have heard all along - Orton was not willing to take less, and Miami was not willing to give him what he wanted - so no way Miami would make the trade, knowing that Orton would be a FA at the end of the season.

That is why I never could understand people being upset with the Broncos FO, for not making the trade. It was not the Broncos FO who shut down the trade.

bottom line was he seen Luck was available in the draft and would rather tank this season and draft a guy that could be a franchise QB rather than pay a guy you know is not.

we really need to lose to Miami

You really don't get it do you? ALL player trades of veterans involve renegotiating the player's contract.
Obviously Orton wanted starter money if he's going to start! And the Dolphins wanted to protect their investment (like all teams do) by giving Orton an extended multi-year contract so that he WOULDN'T BECOME a FA after 2011.

So trading for Orton only to see him become an UFA after the season WAS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.

The article in the Miami Herald points out that the owner shut down the negotiations because they didn't want to pay Orton starter money (essentially what he was getting in Denver or around $8 million per year).

Well, if Orton starts then he gets starter money.

The GM Ireland tried to land Orton because they desperately needed a QB (and need one even worse now that Henne's out). The owner vetoed that because he wants to suck for Luck.

The only guys who got screwed in that deal are the season ticket holders who have to watch garbage for a year and pay through the nose to see Sage Rosenfels the Equestrian Statute imitate an NFL QB.

Kind of a rude tone used in your response, especially since you're wrong. Don't you think?

It is not true that ALL player trades involving veterans involve renegotiations. Many trades have no renegotiations. You just make this stuff up?

Lloyd didn't get a renegotiaed contract did he?

Randy Moss didn't last year either.

He's wrong indeed...

Orton's a "nice" QB? Giving him too much credit, there.

It makes wonder why some people still try blame EFX for the Orton trade falling through.

Clearly it wasn't EFX or Orton's fault. The Dolphins were smart enough to plan for the future instead of fooling themselves into believing they can win now with a game manager.

Yea, it may not have been the FO's fault that the trade fell through but it just shows that a franchise (except us) thought that Orton wasnt worth a bag of Claymore's salty nuts.

Yeah.... Thats my take too. Those few people who "thought" Kyle was a MVP type of qb..... Please.. NO ONE outside of Denver thought this. We couldn't even get "Out of town stupid" to bite.

meh.. let him bring water out to the team during timeouts the rest of the year....

More than just one. AZ wasn't interested. Tenn wasn't interested. Vikings weren't interested. Seattle wasn't interested.

It was Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders fault. Orton had no business getting that sort of money, it was just stupid. They, in effect, made him immovable.

How in the hell is Xanders still earning a paycheck? :protest::flypig:

The FO tried to dump the guy and there just were no takers, not their fault.

I don't remember too many blaming the Fo on this... but they do deserve a stick in the eye for playing the best chance to win card with a B/U QB to "finally" decide at this juncture that Oh yeah maybe not.. it was apparent if you popped in film from post Washington game 09 on..
They are hardly without their share of mistakes.. This time it was the worse owner in sports just being smarter than the Broncos have been when it comes to Kyle Orton.

I think the Colts are in the mix too much I am afraid. When Painter plays he plays like there is spray paint on his hand when he throws. He is even worse than Orton and even T Jackson.
