View Full Version : Some of your favorite obscure Broncos

Every year I follow training camp. I especially watch to see the unsung players. Some of those guys never made it onto the final roster. Some just for a few weeks. Though they hardly if ever played in the regular season, I will always remember them as Broncos.
Here is the place to discuss your favorite obscure Broncos, from the third or fourth stringer to the guys who made it up to the next to last cut for a few years.
My examples come from the scab year of 1987. Though both players had been in camp the year before.

Quarterback Scott Stankavage - remembered thinking "poor ******* won't be able to unseat Kubiak as Elway's backup. Set school single-season records for completions, attempts and yardage. He ranks fourth in career touchdown passes at North Carolina.
Running Back Joe Dudek - kinda looked like Tony Danza tried to become a running back. Hard runner from a Division III school who finished ninth in the Heisman voting in 1985.

Remeber these dudes or ones like them, feel free to share your favorites. .:welcome:

Steve Sewell- Not really a obscure player but not really a full fledged starter either. Just liked his speed and versatility.

Jeff Lewis- Honestly thought he would become something, especially when going to Carolina but just never panned out for him.

Tory James- To this day i still think the PI call against him vs Jax was bogus and turned the tide in that 96' playoff game. He made a great INT and got a BS call.

Charlie Adams- Yea, turned out to be nothing but i liked him for some reason.

Matt Willis- Its early yet but i like what the kid offers. It just depends if he gets a shot to prove it.

Bill Van Heusen. Van Heusen was a WR and punter in the early 70's. His best year was '74, where he was not only a top tier punter but a starting WR with a ridiculous 26+ YPC average. His career average was over 20 yards per catch, and he led the NFL in punting average in 1970.

He had terrible knee problems though, and it cut his career short

He went on to wrestle in WWE and was paralyzed during a match. He has regained the use of his arms but is still in a wheelchair.

Jake Plummer....

I know he wasn't obscure as a Bronco, but he's kind of faded into obscurity now...Does that count?

not obscure as in a non starter but most people not on this site probably forget Mike Anderson. I always liked his story

Randy Hilliard, without a doubt. The guy stuck around the NFL without any discernible football skills for nine years. He played four years in Denver, his final game was the most important in franchise history. He wasn't big, he wasn't fast. He couldn't cover a baby with a blanket. He recorded three of his five career interceptions as a Bronco. He never scored a touchdown or even recovered a fumble.

He nearly died on the field in the final moments Super Bowl XXXII when Steve Atwater went T-27 and decided to terminate all life forms in the immediate vicinity. Most of us remember that play, but my favorite Randy Hilliard moment came earlier in that game when he beat the piss out of Roid Ranger Travis Jervey at mid field on a punt return. Along with Eddie Mac's demolition of Brian Williams on that crackback and Atwater's ongoing hunter/killer mission, the Broncos showed the Packers that they were they to kick ass that Sunday and kick ass they did.

Here's to you, Randy Hilliard. You made good, Scrubby. Flash that Ring with pride.

I couldn't stand him...He would get picked on worse than a short fat kid in chess club.

Orson Mobley. Most impressive thing about the big guy is he was the tight end AND the punter on his college team. He was always my favorite "obscure" player

Nate Jackson - the chic (Nateamania) at BM was so infatuated with the guy.

My mother's favorite obscure Bronco only played here from 1976 to 1978. Godwin Turk, played linebacker. Turk is infamous for dislocating his own shoulder while over exuberantly spiking the ball in jubilation after recovering a turnover during a regular season home game in Denver.
