View Full Version : Am I a musical snob?

I hate the Beatles. U2 makes me gag. New country is pathetic but Johnny Cash is one of my musical heroes.
I love old country, Punk rock, Irish music of all kinds from the Dubliners to the Pogues to Flogging Molly, I love eclectic country (I will say that the Zac Brown band is awesome, thanks for not being watered down pop shit Zack) and blues music like John Prine and the Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, and I love weird off the wall shit like Tom Waits.
Probably 90% of the stuff I love is shit that a very few people have even heard of when compared to the majority of the country. And the stuff I absolutely loathe seems to be the stuff that is the most popular (rap and pop bullshit).
A list of my favorite bands/artists would go like this:
Flogging Molly (best live band in history and Dave King is one of the greatest song writers ever. Some of the band members live in Colorado BTW)
The Pogues (Shane MacGowan is as good a song writer as he is ugly) I saw them live in Denver and it is honestly one of my favorite memories of this life.
Social Distortion Seen them live a ton, the kick so much ass
Warren Zevon Maybe the coolest dude who ever lived.
Tom Waits Poet laureate of street performers. His music is poetry and I consider him a national treasure.
Johnny Cash He's the fuking man in black, what else can be said?
Bob Dylan Never has a better songwriter put pen to paper. If you can listen to Shelter from the Storm and not be in love then you are not human.
The misfits They helped me get through my teens. Brutal and beautiful at the sam time. Bullet makes me want to fuk shit up.
Jimmy Buffet I am just jealous of his life, who wouldn't be?
Murder by Death Macho fuming badassery put to song. I hung out with their bassist for like two hours and he described their music to me perfectly. He said "we write badass songs about badass shit" Fuk an A.
I like all these weird, eclectic bands because I like them, not because I'm trying to be weird or ironic. So, you tell me, am I a snob or a weirdo when it comes to music?

No, you're definitely not a music snob.
Music snobs won't listen to the radio music because its on the radio, and actively seek out other music. It sounds to me like you have listened to a lot of stuff and found the music you like. Nothing wrong with that.
I love Dylan, Cash and Waits. Social Distortion has some good stuff, but I haven't heard any of their stuff for a while.
I differ on the Beatles, especially the late Beatles stuff (post Rubber Soul).
I'm baffled at what tops the charts these days. Just some pure shit for music, imo.

There is good music being made all over the place, but you have to look for it. Some is on the radio, some not. Guys my age too often let their taste in music fossilize and won't give a listen to anything made past the time they were 25, whenever that was.
Now Ke$ha, on the other hand...seriously? Who decided to make a star out of that talentless skank? Proof that the music Industry often sucks, but great music is still made every year.

The only folks I would qualify as music snobs are a decent percentage of classical music buffs. I have had conversations with some that made me want to vomit. To them, if it wasn't written in the 1700's, it is void of any talent and quality. And I love classical music.
I would be MOTORBOAT's version of a music snob. Simply because I truly despise the radio industry and the music industry in general because I have found sooooo much amazing music that could never see the light of day, while tripe like corporate frat boy rock and insert skanky dancer lip syncing and auto tuning to preprogrammed techno gets maddeningy repetitive radio time.
I don't think all radio music sucks, because good talent does rise to the top at times, but there are way too many roadblocks that stop many, many acts from getting past the Nickelback clones and Britney Spears whores. That's why I like Pandora radio so much. and Amazon.com, because you can discover tons of music just surfing around their site.
If you've never heard of Balligomingo, Ray Lynch, the Amazing Royal Crowns, Mind.In.A.Box., Delerium, Shpongle, Frontline Assembly, Massive Attack, Covenant, or Zero 7, thank a radio exec and MTV. Because they would rather shove Justin Beiber and that window shattering blood curdling Nicki Minaj down your throat than promote and release tunes from artists that actually have musical talent.

Think urban, self-consciously cooler than you, skinny jeans, drinking PBR. Their IPOD is full of indy bands too cool and obscure for you to have ever heard of them. Anything you have heard of is by definition not cool. If you like a band it is not cool. If you don't live on the West coast or the right nabes in Brooklyn you aren't cool. They wear wayfarers. They are ironic. They wait tables at vegan restaurants - that kind of thing.

I fear what crap will be shoved down my kids' throats when it comes to music. My wife and I really try to have music we like playing a lot and expose them to it. I guess I survived the 80's and 90's so I suppose my kids will survive whatever audible horror awaits them.

I like a lot of different kinds of music. I love classical piano. I like SOME bluegrass.
I also really enjoy black gospel music.
I use to like dark metal, like Soundgarden, but as you can tell, that doesn't really fit who I am anymore.
I also use to love Bob Marley, but don't really listen to him too much anymore.
Additionally, I think I spend too much time listening to sports talk radio. I think it's time to bust out some of my old black gospel music.
This is one of my favorites, so no laughin'. I know it's not what you are probably accustomed to, but give it a chance. It's essentially about the treasures that are found in the dark times of life.

That's cool. I liked that tune. Probably not something I would listen to on a daily basis but it's cool. Black people can belt out a Gospel tune that's for sure.
As far as classical music goes I could never get into it. I don't really even like long rock instrumentals. I need vocals I guess.

I also love some of Marley's stuff because of the social power behind some of his lyrics. He was a powerful activist in Jamaica.
The lyrics of the above song have great significance. Have you ever closely listened to the lyrics of "crazy baldheads"? He's lamenting the oppression of white landowners in Jamaica.
The lyrics in this one are pretty cool too.

i like the Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash takes. bobby D. is a good musician and imo quite the writer. Tangled up in Blues is one of my favorite Songs by him I consider myself somewhat of a troubadore and have tended to gravitate towards folk music.
I have always kinda dreamed of living the gypsy/hobo life, traveling the rails from town to town with my dog and entertaining the commmon folk with softshoe dancing, much like a Mr. BoJangles in the song of the same name by the nitty Gritty dirt band I'd have to travel back in time to do that though

I do really like that JayZ song 99 problems. Especially the version with Linkin Park. Cool song. I also dig old Beastie Boys and when I was in HS I liked Cypress Hill a little. Other than that I never got into rap too much. It just never hit me right.
Maybe growing up on Rock and especially Punk Rock (Social D, the Misfits, and the Dead Kennedy's) at an early age (10 or so) I just don't have the ability to really grasp what Rap is all about.

Aside from a song here or there i dont care much for it either. I generally like the more humorous stuff from that genre. But i do find it sad that as time goes on the originality factor has really gone by the wayside when it comes to rap in general. I certainly have more respect for those who actually make up their own riffs and beats rather than sample someone else's work. Its cool to see it every once in a while but now it seems to be the norm in terms of creativeness.

Rap = Business Music. Its the crap that they play on MTV and BET.
Hip-Hop is the real shit.
I totally understand the different strokes by different folks comment. I often listen to groups like The Strokes, Dealership, Sublime, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Ramones, etc... but I'm more often going to be listening to Jazz and hip hop.

There is a creative process involved in finding the samples, editing them, and looping them to make something new. Furthermore I love finding the samples that the songs have been created from. If I didn't listen to Hip-Hop, I would never had given great old bands like 10cc or Steely Dan a chance.

In a way I think Rap is like a foreign language. If you don't learn it at a young age it is much harder to do the older you get.
Not slamming it, but it has never even really sounded like music to me. I guess that's what I mean. It's so different sounding than anything I ever listened to.
I hate disco music, but I can make the connection that this is a lyric and this is a beat and so on, whereas Rap just almost sounds alien to me. I guess I just can't form that connection in my brain.

You are more right than you think. It is more difficult to re-wire your brain into enjoying sounds that don't seem familiar to you. A lot of the rock that I can enjoy, I enjoy it because of things like Rock Band, or movies that I watch over and over again.

I am normally in the Chazoe fan club, but on this issue you are terribly, tragically wrong. Like Mike Martz pass blocking scheme wrong. Like trading for Laurence Maroney wrong.

Variety is the spice of life. Only the people who are closed minded about music are "snobs", IMO.
I listen to just about everything... except country. I just can't listen to country music. Sure if I'm in a pool hall and a country song comes on, I'm fine with it, but it's never a genre that I actually would ever seek out. The closest thing I can come to country is the Eagles (love the Eagles).
