View Full Version : The plan for Von Miller

According to what I saw, it seemed like Von Miller had limited opportunities to rush the passer.

After reading through Titan's post and his link to Pro Football Focus's recap of the game (http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2011/09/15/re-focused-raiders-broncos-week-1/), Von Miller actually rushed the passer on only 9 plays. Obviously he was somewhat limited due to Campbell passing only 22 times. That correlates to Von rushing the passer on 40% of his drop backs.
In some ways that is what I imagined heading into the season (I assumed Von rushing about half the snaps), but in other ways it just seems like a limited opportunity to make plays.

Lets assume we shore up the run game enough, to force teams to try to throw it 30 times, given the same pattern, Von would rush about 14 times.

Considering he was the #2 pick in the draft, and drafted primarily for his pass rushing skills, rather than coverage, are you content with this sort of utilization going forward?

Von looks great, I hope they keep doing whatever they are doing. It is a long season and he is a rookie after all.

Von will be fine. We just our DE's to better set the edges to force everything back inside.

Oh wait...we have issues there too.

Damn! We are in trouble.

Not worried about Von's skills. I think he is a player for sure, just wondering if we are playing him to his strengths.

Given our lack of talent going into the season, and our best defensive players wouldnt have been hurt by it, I do question switching back to a 4-3.

I think Dumervil, and Von would both be better in a 3-4 alignment. I dont think our D line would be any worse than it already was. Heck Aubrayo Franklin signed for 1.5 mill, throw him Ty Warren money, and he could have been our NT, with Vickerson and Thomas playing at DE.

I totally agree with this, but it ain't happening. Fox is an old fashion conventional coach, he does not make changes or go outside the box of what he does. I do think what we have seen so far with the offense/defense is what we'll get.

It would be nice for the scheme to have been adjusted to our (by far) 2 most talented front 7 players. I mean is there anyone else on the front 7 worth keeping a scheme for, in any way?

Perhaps the offense could actually take a big lead to where our pass rush would be effective because the other team is playing catch up. Most of us DT advocates knew this coming into the season.....no run defense = VonDoom would be one dimensional and ineffective.

I guess I am saying, even best case scenario, we do get a lead, or pick up 2 stout DT's next yr, is Von rushing the passer 40% of the dropbacks, enough?
Doom is obviously a different story, as a DE, he is rushing almost every snap that the QB is passing. With Von though, sometimes he will be convering, TE, or RB, or in zone, etc.
It sounds like maybe you made this realization earlier, but I am only starting to realize, drafting a pass rush specialist @#2 overall, and not letting him rush the passer most snaps, well, thats not great for him...

I feel like Von could have a Clay Matthews like impact on the game, but what would Clay Matthews be on a team that ran a 4-3?

Our offense is not a big play high scoring offense.

DT was not the problem last monday where the run defense was concerned.
