After an article last week about how successful "second chance" coaches are in the NFL, Ted Sundquist (@ted_sundquist) dug up a Football Outsiders article that looked into the success of coaches at different ages.
One puzzle piece that Simmons may have missed is that young coaches are not particularly successful either. Coaches aged 41 or younger are a combined 484-569. At age 42, however, coaches seem to hit their stride. They are a combined 214-194, and seven of the 10 best ages for coaches (100 games minimum) are the nine years from 42 and 50. The absolute peak seasons, in terms of winning percentage, are ages 44 and 45. (Figure 1)
