Does anybody know how many times our DL has tackled opposing players for a loss and how we rank in that category this year compared to the rest of the league?

I don't have access for the Propectus (I suspect that stat is available there, if you want to pay the $40-50) but this should at least help you get an idea how well our D-line plays as a whole. The 10+ yard rank of 31 really stands out to me. According to the explanation given, it means our defensive line is better than our linebackers and secondary.

Thinking more about this.....it would be really interesting to look at these stats over the last three games vs the rest of the season.

I was wondering because our DL doesn't seem to make that many tackles for a loss.

Does it matter if it's DL or any other defensive player making the tackle?

I was wondering about the DL specifically. I've been watching a lot of football this week and noticed each game had several plays in which a defensive lineman tackling a rb for a loss, something we don't see too often from our team. I guess I'm wondering if there are any DL's statistically worse than ours?

This is were someone who's smarter than me about defensive 'schemes' (I use that term loosely when referring to our team) steps in and explains. Our fast linebackers are supposed to be making those tackles from what I understand. But don't quote me on that. :D

I was intrigued by this discussion, so I did some research on it. I don't have access to the site that Frau suggested but I compiled the stats on my own using espn tackles for loss stat. These were based on before the games were played this last week. One thing to note, is that as Frau eluded to, a lot is going to depend on the scheme being played. A 4-3 defense traditionally will have more tackles for losses from their D-Line then a team that runs the 3-4. This is a generalized statement though, and someone who is more familiar with the particulars of a scheme could answer that.

I don't think this is the end all be all on deciding if a Dline is bad, but it does give a good overall view IMO. The thing that jumps out at me, is that our tackles for loss are right in the middle of the pack, with 17 teams that are below our numbers. However we are last in D-Line tackles for loss. I can't tell you if this is the norm based on our scheme, but it does show that our line doesn't seem to make the tackles for a loss that the rest of our Linebackers and Defensive Backs do.

Thanks for stats! I'm suprised to see where we stood with the rest of the league. Happy with the way we played against the Jets!

the problem with looking at it this way is that the scheme is for our dline to hold up blockers for the linebackers.

Yeah, the scheme does have a lot to do with it, but I don't think anyone but Slowick knows what we are doing at any giving moment.

That being said though, I am still shocked to see that our DLine ranks last in this stat. We should IMO be at least ahead of defenses who run a 3-4.

This doesn't really tell you anything. Green Bay looks good as a percentage but they've only had 17 TFL's. Plus, except for coverage sacks, teams that have been playing against teams that favor the pass will have lower numbers. Too many variables to consider.
