I'm kind of copying a poster from Mania, and he turned out a fantastic thread.
So if you have some favorite guitar solos, let us know. This is for the lover of
guitars.

Let me start with Tommy Emanuel's "Initiation." Really off-beat and fantastic.
All the sound effects are from his guitar. This is almost nine minutes and worth
every second.

One of my favorites is Metallica's Fade to Black.

I also really like the Allman Brother's Blue Sky. I like some of the slower Floyd solos like Comfortably Numb too.

Literally everything everyone else has posted rocks too, great thread top.

I would also throw in Pat Metheny when I'm in a jazzier mood, but I haven't gone there in a while.

I've always really liked this guy Edgar Cruz out of Oklahoma, too. I've got all his albums. He's a fly under the radar acoustic guitarista. Anyway, one of my favorite guitar solos is his rendition of "ghost riders in the sky" which you can find here (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6nca2_acoustic-medley-edgar-cruz_music) beginning at 8:00. His studio version is slightly better; he pops an open harmonic G after the final arpeggio that makes me shiver it's that good.

I like how he kicks it on steel string.

This one's one of my two faves. Real tough to beat this one. I mean, seriously, he did some of these effects before they were invented. That's just ridiculous. Also, real hard to argue against Stairway, seeing as it's pretty much the greatest of all time. Oh, and improved, for the most part.

Also, props to these:

Caption:

Long version of Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughn! Texas Flood is an electric
blues album by blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and his band Double
Trouble, released in 1983.

Although "Texas Flood" has three verses of lyrics, the song is more of a
prolonged guitar solo, allowing Vaughan to show off his characteristic electric
blues style. During live shows, he would often play portions of this song
behind his back, arousing an enthusiastic crowd response. Stylistically, "Texas
Flood" is structured around the common three chord blues progression.
Written and performed in the key of G (sounding F# because of Vaughan's
tuning), it is in 12/8 time, or compound time[1], which gives it a "slow burning"
feel that is common in Texas blues.

It's interesting, although I disagree with much of it. They have Stevie
Ray Vaughan at #12, but I believe he's better than most of the others
ranked higher than he. And where are Steve Vai, Tommy Emmanuel,
and Joe Bonamassa, among others?

They still have Jimi Hendrix at the top, but, while he was the creme

In all fairness, the article is dated 2011, but the ones I mentioned and
many others have been around much longer than that.

In all fairness, the article is dated 2011, but the ones I mentioned and
many others have been around much longer than that.

Those rankings are always kinda lame, it's hard to argue them because its all personal opinion anyway. I don't think Jimi should be anywhere in the top 5 TBH, he was a pretty sloppy player.

I think its kinda funny they have Albert King and SRV at 12 and 13 and state that SRV was influenced by Jimi? SRV was influenced by King, that's who he looked up to.

I would put Eddie Van Halen above all of those guys. I always thought Paige and Hendrix were sloppy compared to him. He revolutionized the guitar. How many people were tapping and doing the hammer ons before him?

So subjective. I find I tend to be moved by sloppier players. I mean I love shredders too but a guy like Satriani can't write a decent/catchy riff in a band setting to save his ass -- but is a far more technical player than EVH. But EVH has many dozens of iconic songs and riffs - I'd go EVH hands down.

Jimi was sloppy -- hell even Page was sloppy. "Don't care"...

EVH said that Paige was amazing, but live sounded like a "two year old with a broken arm." Watch "The Song Remains the Same." I think you'll agree.

Eddie was also more than a "shredder." He played some slower stuff. Just a musical genius.

you can say that about a lot of the guys on that list... Albert King was the king of bends and Elmore James was the king of slide. Eddie didn't start "tapping" or hammer-ons, he started two-hand tapping. People were doing the former for a long time.

Actually, it might be surprising to note that Chet Atkins was tapping long before
the word was devised to describe it. He just didn't do it a lot. I guess he never
thought of it as anything special.

A little story about Stevie Ray Vaughan, as told by Eric Clapton: Eric was driving
along one day, and this guitar player came over the radio. Eric pulled over and
just listened. Then he thought he had to find out who that was, and he had to
find out now. As it turned out, it was SRV.

Eric said that every guitar player gets to a point where his score kind of dries up,
and he thinks, where do I go from here? I guess it takes a professional player to
detect that in another player because Eric said he never detected that with SRV,
that SRV just had that knack of knowing where he's going at all times. That's
really saying something because Eric confessed that it had happened even to
himself.

Speaking of Eric Clapton, the day Jimi Hendrix died, Eric was on this way to
see Jimi. He had brought with him a guitar that he was going to give to Jimi
as a gift.

This is a fun one. While playing the guitar behind his back, SRV broke a
guitar string. His brother Jimmie picked up the slack while SRV changed
guitars. Stevie then put the guitar back behind his back and picked up
the song in progress. Nothing short of impressive.

There are so many great guitarists out there, sadly, most of them stay unknown. I disdain pure shredders, so I tend to stay away from most guitar-solo genres (after having played in some progressive/hard rock and metal bands myself). However, I still admire the pre-2000 John Petrucci. Such great and delicate guitar work... my favourite has to be his Lines in the Sand solo. Such great tone, such great buildup, so much emotion in that one. Still makes me smile.

Underrated candidate here - two great solos... Live version is best, but can't find a super clean version.

First one ~ 2:00 -

Second one ~ 4:00

Randy!

The day before Osbourne was scheduled to return to England, Rhoads agreed to audition for Osbourne at a Los Angeles studio with his Gibson Les Paul guitar and a practice amp and started warming up. Osbourne, who was very inebriated on that day, said of the audition "He played this ******* solo and I'm like, am I that ******* stoned or am I hallucinating or what the **** is this?!" Osbourne has maintained that he immediately gave him the job. Rhoads recalled later, "I just tuned up and did some riffs, and he said, 'You've got the gig'; I had the weirdest feeling, because I thought, 'You didn't even hear me yet'".

I'm sure it's been said, probably even by me in this thread, but Gilmour's solo in Time is my favorite. Sometimes it's best to let it breathe.

This was a good fingerpicking electric guitar solo I'd never heard until 2 minutes ago

He definitely wouldn’t be someone I would mention, but that was excellent. I’ve always found the thumb pick to be a difficult technique to pick up, personally.
