Denver (27)

I fear the first year of the John Fox regime will be a long, ugly one filled with Tim Tebow-related controversy. (Kuharsky)

Yea, im not sure when they made this but considering that McCoy and Cleveland looked pretty good the other night vs the Packers (i know, its preseason but..) yet has them 28th kind of leaves me shaking my head. The Dolphins are 24th and i think they are in for a bigger world of hurt than the Browns or Broncos.

I think it's fair. Denver was one of the two worst teams last year and, until they can show they are better than that when the real bullets are flying, they deserve to be ranked that low (if not lower).

Preseason realllly doesn't matter that much when it comes to evaluating team strength. The Lions' preseason record the year they went 0-16?

4-0.

Yeahhh, preseason results are accurate. :-)

Wow, how the heck did we wind up 27th? What five teams are worse. ;)

Seriously, based on last year, so many questions including at QB, I can understand the low ranking. I certainly am hoping for a lot more, but I understand it.

I realize that, however i think it would be fair to say its easy to see where some teams improved for the year prior and of course vice versa. I just dont see Miami being all that good this year, certainly not in the 24 range.

Their defense alone, improved running game.... Oh and NOT having Orton makes them a prohibitive favorite over us right now.

Miami has a really solid D, unlike us. They also have a promising (though unproven) rookie RB. Solid O-line and decent WR's....The only question mark they really have is QB, so I can definitely see them having a 8 or 9 win season easily.

I moved from Colorado Springs to South Florida for my job about 8 years ago, so Miami has kind of become my 2nd team, and I can tell you they are miles ahead of us....

The problem is, the rookie is unproven so cant really rely on that. Also, their division is ten times harder as well. 9 wins wont be that easy.

You are correct on both points, but I think the NFL has shown in recent years that finding a RB to put up solid production actually isn't that hard provided that you have a good O-line.

As far as the division, they do get Buffalo twice, Washington, Cleveland (and the Broncos). They normally find a way to split with NE most years.

There isn't a team in the NFL that Denver could play, at home or away, and I would feel good about our chances. Even Carolina has some explosion and defense...

I just think this is a VERY bad Denver team and I think that Cinci is being vastly underrated, Carson Palmer has held that offense back in recent years.

The raiders are going to have a field day running on us if we dont do something about our DL.

The Broncos at least have a QB who's mediocre in Kyle Orton. The Dolphins have no QB. It's a giant total mess.

That 24th ranking isn't going to last long once the Dolphins start the season.

Unfortunately, with the injuries to Warren & Thomas, the heart of the new defense is going to be on the disabled list to start the season and Warren will probably not play at all (his $4 million is probably the worst FA decision the Broncos have made since, well I'm trying to think. . . . Maybe CB Dale Carter back in 2000?

What do you guys think? Maybe Travis Henry? Daryl Gardner? But Gardner didn't make NEARLY $4 million. There were some big-name guys who just came in for a cup of coffee, sucked briefly and didn't stick around: Sam Adams, Simeon Rice, Jimmy Kennedy. But, none of them got anything like $4 million either.

Are any of us really surprised by this? That's my question... Any fan that believes we deserve to be higher is high on spiked orange kool-aid! We're rebuilding and our starting quarterback is mediocre, our cornerbacks are over the hill and our defensive tackles are all re-treads give Thomas.

Denver's next draft they'll have to draft a quarterback, a few defensive lineman - especially tackles, plus some cornerbacks.

I'm not sure who Denver can beat... It would take a lot of luck to pull off some wins it seems. I really don't know if we will be favored in any games this season and Vegas has us winning between 5 and 6 games...

It's really a strange situation for us Denver fans, we haven't started a season facing this sort of defeatism in decades.

I disagree, I believe a fair number of the fans felt far more defeatism last off-season under McDaniels. He had just gotten rid of Marshall, Thomas wasn't really showing much and Lloyd wasn't really favored to have a breakout season. Let alone all the other changes...it wasn't a grandiose start by any means.

I wouldn't totally agree with this. There's nothing wrong with Champ Bailey and Goodman. Bailey is still an elite CB and Goodman is decent. That is the ONE position where the Broncos aren't currently in trouble!

If the Broncos had a decent pass-rush you would see better coverage downfield. But, give the QB 4 or 5 seconds to throw and it wouldn't matter if your CB was Deion Sanders, they're going to get completions. :coffee:

Denver's starting DTs last year were the worst in football. They were 32nd in the league in giving up rushing TDs and that's probably the worst stat you can have.

So, they signed Ty Warren who was an excellent DT -- a few years ago, but who missed the entire 2010 season due to hip injury.

His hip was supposedly fine, but clearly the Patriots were onto something when they failed him at his physical due to "conditioning issues." When a player is desperately trying to work themselves into football shape after a long layoff due to serious injury where they couldn't work out properly, another injury is likely.

So this isn't a total surprise. The Broncos desperately need to draft an elite DT but if they didn't do it this year I don't see it happening next season either.

They will need to use their #1 pick on a QB to come in and compete with Tebow (unless Fox decides to re-sign Orton).

And if the team struggles to win 6 or 7 games I can't see them re-signing Orton.

MOST of the hope for an improved season was based on the defensive improvement that was supposedly going to take place.

Only most of that improvement was going to be due to signing a few key veterans: Ty Warren, Bunkley being the best of them.

Now I don't know how bad they will be without Warren and Thomas to start the season; but I guess we'll find out!

Logically, you are right. It's just that a lot of fans were still drinking the McDaniels cool-aid to start 2010: "they were 8-8 last year (2009) and yet the haters are acting like this is a 4-12 team! They will be just fine! I predict 10-6! Whoo! Hoo! Go Broncos!"

Nope. If they still have time left on their contract (Palmer has 2 more years remaining) that time is in limbo until he returns to the field. Why do you think Barry Sanders never tried to come back and play for a different team after a year and win a ring? Because no matter what, Detroit owned his rights and they had to either trade or release him.

If Jake Plummer decided tomorrow that he was making a comeback, The Bucs would own his rights because that's where he was traded before retiring no matter how long the layoff has been.

When Eddie Quittison pulled the "retired" crap with us and then signed with the Queefs, Shanny honestly believed Quittison was retiring and he released him from his contract. That's why he could sign with another team. Brown knows Palmer is just trying to force a trade and if he was released, he'd immediately sign with a different team.
