Can someone explain the difference between a 4-3 defense with downlineman comprised of DE/DT/DT/DE and DE/DT/NT/DE? I don't see any NTs listed on the Broncos roster but read that their are 4-3 defenses with an interior DT/NT combo vice two DTs. Thanks!

This explains it better than I ever could:

The Broncos are likely to institute the 4-3 under talked about in that.

Could you add that to football 101 thread area

Should also read about the Tampa 2 Defense, which Fox runs a variant of.

I think with the DT/NT combo the guys are bigger and more run stoppers, using smaller speed guys on the edges.

Add all of those things to how aggressive Dennis Allen tries to be with the turnovers and this defense might be good this year.

I have hopes. We need to stop the run first, or at least slow it down. If we can do that and force teams to pass we may be playing to a strength. Doom certainly can get after the quarterback. If Miller is as good as advertised our secondary shouldn't have to cover for five seconds. We may see some turnovers.

I'm gonna hang around in "wait and see" land for a while. No predictions or expectations from this guy just yet.

It's more of a 3-3, not sure if Ayers counts yet

The difference is where you align your weakside tackle (3, 2i, or 1 technique) and what his gap responsibilities are.
