CHARGERS CLAIM MICHAEL BENNETT
Posted by Michael David Smith on November 12, 2008, 6:01 p.m.

The San Diego Chargers have added another running back, claiming former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Michael Bennett on waivers.

At first blush, that wouldn’t seem to make much sense: The Chargers have LaDainian Tomlinson as their starter, Darren Sproles is having a good season in relief of Tomlinson, and they spent this year’s third-round draft pick on Jacob Hester.

But Adam Schefter of NFL Network points out the real reason the Chargers claimed Bennett: They want to keep him from the Broncos. Denver is desperate for help at running back, and with the Chargers a game behind the Broncos in the AFC West, San Diego is desperate to keep Denver from improving. The Broncos and Chargers both put in claims on Bennett, but since the Chargers have a worse record, the Chargers get priority.

This isn’t the first time the Chargers have made a waiver claim solely to stop a division rival from adding a player. In 2002, the Washington Redskins waived Deion Sanders from the reserve/retired list. Sanders had wanted to come out of retirement to join the Oakland Raiders during their playoff run, but the Chargers claimed Sanders to keep him from the Raiders.

That, of course, was particularly galling to Sanders, because the reason he retired from the Redskins in the first place was that he didn’t want to play for then-Redskins coach Marty Schottenheimer — who was the Chargers’ coach when San Diego claimed him.

Apparently we also put in a waiver claim for Justin Miller from the Jets, but the Raiders had priority.

Sometimes, I guess it sucks to have the best record in your division.

Bummer. I think Tater will fill in just fine though. He'll probably crank out 500-600 yards and 5-6 TDs before season's end if he's healthy; which he should be.

Thanks for the info, but if they think they're hurting us, they're not.

Ugghh. I saw enough of Bennett here in Minnesota to know he isn't worth the time or effort to fill out the paperwork for the claim. He is fast, but so are lots of guys. No moves and the hole has to be big and sustained for him to see it and hit it. Waste of time.

Bring in Ron Dayne...

He was the PERFECT fit for our zone blocking scheme.... the same scheme which was ran at Wisconsin (and still is).

Lucky for TB that the Chargers took Bennett. You got to believe that if we picked up Bennett...one of either Bell or Haynes would have been going home.

Personally, I think that Mike Anderson would be our best option.:coffee:

except for that if he does unretire, he will immediately be suspended for 1 year because of 2nd violation of the NFL drug policy.

Chargers seem really desesperate if they only need that to beat us !
To beat a team with so many injuries and with no D... pfff...

What they really need is to put as many wins as we could do and wait for the revenge at their home... Are they so afraid??? Really???
That shows the confidence they have in themselves!

Anyway, I think Bell is a better choice... he already knows the system and he wasn't that bad (ok.. .not that great too :D)

The Chargers cut stopgap linebacker Derrick Smith today to make room for Michael Bennett.

Thanks. If the Bolts get hit by injuries there will be no way they can hang on to Bennet unless those injuries are at RB.

The Boltz have plenty of running backs, but are weak on defense. Packing in another runner while losing more defense depth sounds like a "cutting off your nose to spite your face" kind of move.

I just spoke with AJ Smith and he gave me permission to seek a trade of Bennett to the Broncos. He told me if I could get 4 A&W Rootbeer bottlecaps and a used band aid, I can take the deal.

Sorry, but I have to hold firm on this one and can't go any lower.

They signed Smith because Cooper was suspended for the first 4 games. Smith has been inactive the last 3 weeks and wasn't going to see the field again. I'm actually surprised he stayed on the roster this long.

Stupid move by the Chargers. Bennett would of made us a worse team than what we already are. Just shows how stupid they really are.
