Broncos pushing to re-sign Marcus Thomas

Before they get serious about pursuing unrestricted free agent defensive tackles from other teams, the Broncos are making a push to re-sign their own Marcus Thomas.

It’s been difficult for the two sides to get in the same neighborhood on financial terms because there is what Marcus Thomas can be, and has been, as a defensive tackle in the 4-3 (21 starts in 2007-08). And there was what Thomas wasn’t as a 5-technique defensive end in the 3-4 (2 starts in 2009-10).

So perhaps its a little — OK, a lot — early to be coming up with names for the Broncos defense, but you’ll have to forgive Von Miller.

The kid sure is excited.

Miller flew to Denver from Dallas Tuesday morning to attend voluntary workouts and meetings at Dove Valley and meet many of his new teammates.

So to review the ups and downs of the offseason, running back Knowshon Moreno has lost 10 to 15 pounds to 200; defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson has lost 20 pounds to 285 and Elvis Dumervil has gained 14 pounds to 258.

Dumervil had to put on weight because he is moving from outside linebacker in the 3-4, where he had to occassionally cover backs out of the backfield, to defensive end in the 4-3, where he will have to more often play the run.

good. i like thomas, and re-signing him is a good move. not good enough to excuse not pursuing other DTs, but still a good move.

Jamal Williams and Bannan are still the most likely pick ups imo, got let go for contract/lockout reasons, door was left open

I hope we can resign Banaan even though it was the right move to cut him.

He might not be too happy about being cut but Im also sure he doesnt have a desire to uproot his family with his wife expecting and all.

Ortoon for a first or second? We have the best F.O. in football if we pull that one off............I hope he goes to Mihammy for at least a two........

War, what do you think about Nate Irving? I'll hang up and listen to your answer on air.

Getting a really bad vibe concerning the DT position.

What is the deal with them not pursuing any DT's thus far? Barry Cofield is now off the market.

That leaves Jenkins, Mebane for us to have to overpay if we want them. Looking more likely that we'll have to bring back Thomas and possibly Williams since we're quickly running out of options.

Well, we just lost out on Cofield... Damn you Dan Snyder!

With Cofield off the market and Seattle doing everything they can to re-sign Mebane, Thomas may be our best, and only, option.

Yay, let's resign the guys who gave us the worst running defense in the league last year, yay!

I've read Franklin from the 9ers is available what is known about him?

Older player on the decline. We've tried that too much already. Can't believe we're again resorting to over the hill and second tier DT's to put a band aid on a gunshot wound.

We just might be selecting in the top five again if this keeps up.

Well, isn't that the key to getting a good DT anyway?

Key? No. If they were following that logic, they would have selected Marcell Dareus. BTW, I'm not saying in any way that Von Miller was the wrong choice.

I like Alan Branch. Young guy, had a good year last season. whoever signs him could be catching him in his breakout year.

CC,

I've been pimping him since last year. After reading, the various beat writers at the DP, I don't even think Branch is on the teams radar.

I think he'd be a great fit here. The light finally seems to be coming on for him and he fits well into Fox's up the field, penetrating style of DT's.

I will be pissed if they go the entire offseason and don't address the teams biggest need (by a lont shot) in any way.

I can't beleive how quiet they've been since announcing Orton was available.

Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas will start 2011 on the Non-Football Injury list after failing his physical at Dove Valley on Thursday.

This news should not come as a surprise. Thomas tore his Achilles tendon and had surgery in February. He, and the team, are holding out hope that he will be able to play by midseason.

Make that four rookies who will certainly be in camp on time.

Tight end Julius Thomas, linebacker Mike Mohamed and defensive end Jeremy Beal signed their four-year deals with the Broncos Wednesday evening.

Mario Fannin fielded a bunch of phone calls Monday night, as soon as teams were able to start contacting undrafted rookies.

Of all the sales pitches, Fannin liked what the Broncos were saying best. Fannin, a running back from Auburn, signed with the Broncos Tuesday night after arriving in Denver, and was working out with his new teammates by Wednesday morning.

“I felt like this was the best place to come,” Fannin said. “I talked to the coaches and they all seemed like good coaches and they had a lot of faith in me coming in and being able to make the team. I listed to other teams, and the Broncos came up with the best offer and the best situation for me.”

Broncos kicker Matt Prater and linebacker Wesley Woodyard are both here in Denver, ready to join their teammates for the start of training camp at Dove Valley.

Neither will be allowed through the doors, though, until Friday, when teams are allowed to sign free agents. Both Prater and Woodyard are restricted free agents. The Broncos gave both players a second-round tender, meaning both players are in line for a nice pay raise in 2011.

If they don't address DT, I'm sticking with my prediction that the Broncs will employ the "Suck For Luck" strategy. Guessing the Niners might do the same.
