...Interesting prospect:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/641862-draft-of-necessity-a-seven-round-houston-texans-mock-draft

7. Deron Mayo—LB/Old Dominion

Seventh-round picks often do not make a final roster, so it makes sense to pick someone with an intriguing amount of upside. Mayo, who is the brother of Patriots Pro Bowl linebacker Jerod Mayo, started his career at Hofstra but was forced to transfer after the football program was dropped.

While Mayo played defensive end in college, he will likely play linebacker or maybe even safety because of his 225-pound, 5’10” frame. Mayo, however, has been clocked in the mid-4.3 range previously and impressed scouts at Virginia’s pro day when he benched 225 pounds 28 times and jumped 38 inches vertically.

While Mayo likely will never start unless he shows remarkable ability to convert from a defensive lineman to a safety, his ability on special teams makes him worth the draft selection. ODU did not start using him in that capacity until halfway through the season when a game was on the line, but after he stepped up in that situation to block a punt which sealed a victory, he became a mainstay and blocked two more punts that year.

His athleticism and willingness to do whatever it takes gives this undersized player a chance to make a final roster.

Denver had better pick up some experienced, proven run stoppin' veteran
D-Linemen !

SOON !!!

The Broncos passed up many chances on rookies in the draft so I figure
that the powers that be decided to bolster the porous Denver D-Line
via FA. That way the Broncos get experienced, ready to roll linemen.
Anyway, that's how I rationalized the lack of DL picks in the draft.

If Denver doesn't pick up some stud D-Line guys during this FA Frenzy
the Broncos might as well kiss the whole season adiós because it will be the
same old story if Denver can't stop the run.

BRONCOS: GET SOME D-LINE GUYS !!!
LET CHAMP WORK THE SECONDARY THIS SEASON !!!

Broncos agreed to terms with former Auburn RB Mario Fannin.
Fannin has a top-end combo of size (5'10/231) and speed (4.38), which makes you wonder why he rarely saw action as a ball carrier at Auburn. He did set the Tigers' all-time records for receptions and receiving yards by a running back. Built well to hold up in pass protection, Fannin profiles as a third-down back. That happens to be an area of strength for Knowshon Moreno.

His body type and computer #s compare favorably to Jonathan Stewart, the former Duck who Fox drafted and coached in Carolina.

I still don't doubt we go after another "co-starter" level back, e.g. DeAngelo or Ronnie Brown.

Fannin will need to beat out the likes of LenDale White and Lance Ball to make the team, unless they convert him to FB!

Since Denver did not attempt to address the Broncos' glaring D-Line
problem through the "Draft", I don't see how any 8th rounders are
going to immediately be impact players.
Most UCFAs won't cut it for the big time.
They will help the practice squad, that's it.
Denver needs some men for the D-trenches through FA.

Was projected as a late round or priority UDFA, which it turns out is on the money.

I think he can compete with Ball and White, but if his fumble problems and lack of elusiveness continue...he wont make it through camp.

My point is, dont expect him to be some gem that goes from UDFA to Pro-Bowler. Some people seem to be making too big of a deal out of this signing.

The guy is a total product of one cut running behind a ZBS. No, he's not someone you want to give the ball 25 times, but that's not what we're looking for anyway. Considering the options and which has the best value for the assumed price-tag, I would totally be good with a Barber signing.

no, I'm totally with you. a chiseled masculine body makes me harder than a diamond in an icestorm. Yeah, because its realistic to assume lightning will strike twice

With the draft shrinking down to 7 rounds, there are a lot more UDFAs that are successful in the NFL these days. It's not unheard of anymore and it's not even all that rare.

There were actually double digit players (I want to say 20 or so) that were pro-bowlers this year that were also UDFAs. UDFAs have become very important to a lot of teams these days.

The guy who beat out AP and CJ2K for the rushing title last year was an UDFA.

David Anderson Scouting Report - Scouts, Inc.Grade: 58 | Key

Comment: Since being selected by the Texans in the seventh round of the 2006 draft, Anderson has steadily developed into a quality backup receiver. He lacks the height and length you hope to find in a receiver, but plays the game strong with the leaping ability and hand strength to compete for balls against some of bigger corners in the league. Anderson has good quickness coming off the line and can avoid the jam with strength or foot quickness. He is a crisp route runner who has the ability to sink his hips to get in and out of his breaks with a good burst and will gain a step of separation. He lacks the top-end speed to threaten secondaries deep on a consistent basis but has shown the ability to be a factor on underneath routes.

Personally I think we did good, I think there might have been some better FA, but there would have been expensive. I like how Willis and Warren were the only 2 players to get multi year contracts the rest were 1 yr.....shows they are just temps and we will be building team through the draft.

not a free agent signing - but I did not want to start a new thread for this

The Broncos added roster depth Monday by claiming linebacker Alvin Bowen, who was waived two days ago by Jacksonville. The Broncos, who have the No. 2 spot on the waiver wire, were awarded the claim. Bowen, 27, appeared in two games for Jacksonville last year. He is 6-1, 222 pounds and played his college ball at Iowa State.
