One NFC team executive said, after this week's owners meetings, the owners and players are "within striking distance" of a deal. The two sides have spent the last month negotiating the revenue split -- by far the biggest issue on the table. On Thursday, the meetings will reach another critical juncture, as the sides go in depth into the rookie system for the first time since starting the "secret" meetings in Chicago on May 31.

So if they fire all of the lawyers, could they have a deal done by the end of the day?

The fact that they're finally making progress can be attributed to the fact that they kicked the lawyers out of the room for a while.

Now that they're trying to officially draw up the final papers, it's an unfortunate necessity to involve the lawyers again.

We can dream though.

A source told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio that Wednesday's talks were "very fruitful" and the expectation is that discussions will continue until a deal is reached.

"We are headed in the right direction," the source said. "There is a desire on both sides to reach an agreement sooner rather than later."
