Q: What's the latest? We keep hearing everybody's talking, but do you think the season will start late because of the lockout? How much time do you think the teams will have to get ready?

A: That ruling is expected by July, and when it comes, one side in the negotiations will have leverage over the other. Each side believes it will get a favorable ruling but is not certain enough to simply wait and see, given courts have already ruled both ways on the lockout. The ruling could also be a mixed bag that helps or hurts both sides as well.

No disrespect to anyone that thinks the owners have the players over barrel because it's simply a false perception. If they did there would be no need stack these meetings up one after the other. The owners are every bit as concerned about a loss in the courts or a mixed bag as the players are.

Both sides will need to compromise. This way there no winners or losers.

From Adam Schefter:

A handful of NFL owners -- at least two of which are from AFC teams -- believe the parameters of the deal being discussed don't adequately address the original issues the league wanted corrected from the 2006 collective bargaining agreement, according to sources.

It is one of the primary reasons team officials are being prepped to stay an extra night in Chicago at Tuesday's owners meetings. It's not to potentially vote on a new collective bargaining agreement, as many suspected; it actually is to try to fend off some of the resistance that is mounting from a handful of NFL owners, according to sources.

They need 24 owners to approve whatever they seem to be close to.

Things not looking good there where 2 teams that voted against the last CBA so are there now 7 more that might not be happy campers if so the current proposal is toast.

Again - optimism vs. pessimism. It would be easier to convince one of the alleged nine than one of the alleged 23.

The owners feel they were shafted the last time these two sides sat down. They have been bitter ever since. Some owners more so than others... these are the ones are leading the crusade. The owners have been planning to dominate these negotiations and get back control of their league for years. They even tried to stockpile billions of dollars to put the lean on the players with a lockout. Its not just money they want, money can be negotiated. What the owners really want is change in policy -more games, restructure in salary and so on. I think its these points that the two sides cant agree on and get a deal done. Of course money too, but they want a better grip on their league.

Too bad they ran into DeMaurice Smith and a buzzsaw in the NFLPA. Now we may puke in our own mouths a lil when we think of Smith, no secret hes a hated man. But he is doing a hell of a job for the players side. We may want football, but this is still a business. The players refused to buckle and the leverage swung back in the players favor by using the courts.

Instead of "getting back their damn league" as one owner put it, now its a matter of not putting themselves at greater risk in court. Now the owners will get a little better grip on their league but by in large they will have to abandon their larger goals. What all this means IMO is that the lockout will end in couple weeks before the courts ruling. The players will drop the suit, the league will drop the lockout and there will be glorious football again.
