Broncos linebacker Joe Mays beefs up for season

Mays is the Broncos' version of a post-spinach Popeye, having added 10 pounds of muscle to his 5-foot-11 body this offseason, seemingly all of it in his arms, shoulders and chest. He plans to slim down to his playing weight of 245 pounds at the season's start.

I think Mays was a good pick-up last year. If nothing else I think he will provide good depth for us at linebacker.

I think Mays endeared himself to Broncos fans last year because he's a downhill run stuffing MLB. Hagan probably plays a bit smarter and DJ is obviously way more versatile and talented but Mays plays with obvious passion. In the worst year I've ever seen as a football/Broncos fan Mays was fun to watch.

He chicken-winged it, and looked like he had an inside-out swing...probably pushes everything left.

Mays will make a wonderful stop-gap until Irving is ready to be a top-of-the-line middle linebacker.

Unfortunately, I don't know if Irving is a top-of-the-line middle linebacker..

I like Irving, from the little I saw of him. I think he could be a very solid middle linebacker.

I think he's very comparable to Curtis Lofton. And if he turned out like Lofton in three years, it would be a very good pick.

Well, let's hope he plays longer for denver than lofton did his 1st team....stays healthier. But lofton's main asset was his speed.

Mybad. I thought he was released last year and was a free agent.

He's got this year left on his rookie contract if the CBA all holds up and such. He's either going to anchor that core for years to come or draw a pretty nice salary on the open market next offseason.

I hope Irving is that type of player for Denver.

If he can plug the middle and let D.J. make plays from the weak side, while Miller can play more along the line of scrimmage, especially in pass situations, then that could be a real strength for the Broncos.

Irving's coverage skills were decent in college. Hope that translates. He's a little slow to match up with NFL running backs though, especially those that teams use in passing situations.

I totally agree, Mays was fun to watch, he was a bright spot last year. I was hoping he stuck to the roster and was given a chance to make an impact this season. I think this is good news that he has dedicated his body to getting stronger. I thought the defense was much more solid up the middle with him in the lineup and he had a pretty good nose for the ball.

If he beefs up too much, he could get moved to DE. Could be a backup to Ayers of Doomer. He wants to get back down to his 245 size, what is he up to now?

245 is average to small for the Mike LBr. Not sure if he's EVER played on the D-line. But yes. he'd probably be a stud DE...in madden.

Well May's weight is over 245 and that is over Doomers weight unless Doomer is stocking up for DE. What did Mays play in college?

I think he's UP TO 245 right now, which would seem to be an adequate size for him, it's not like he needs to carry 260 or anything. I agree, 245-250 is a good MLB size.

Well the article said he gained 10 pounds of muscle but wants to get back down to 245.

So I'm going to infer that he weighs 255 right now.
