JOPLIN, MO. — Hall of Famer John Elway was a hero to Broncos fan Steven Stephens, who became a hero last month.

Stephens gave his life to save others during the Joplin tornado.

A 28-year-old construction worker, Stephens managed to free his wife, Tasha, from their car in front of the St. John's Hospital emergency room as the tornado was bearing down on them. As he helped her, his mother-in-law and some friends to safety, a sports utility vehicle landed on him, resulting in injuries that cost him his life.

Stephens was taking a friend with chest pains to the emergency room when the tornado struck.

Upon learning of the tragedy and Stephens' love of all things Broncos, the team sent a care package of jerseys, autographed pictures and condolence cards to Tasha and her three children.

"He loved that team," Tasha, 27, said Thursday through tears as she remembered her husband and his acts that night.

I hope, if there is a season, when the Broncos play in KC Elway and CO reach out to them again!
