ARVADA - There are some football rivalries that one can count on being tightly contested every single meeting.

For the northwest metro area, that rivalry comes in the form of Arvada West against Pomona.

At the North Area Athletic Complex on Friday night, another nail-biter ensued between the neighborhood opponents.

The No. 9 Wildcats emerged with a 24-14 win against the seventh-ranked Panthers, marking the seventh consecutive time the game has been decided by 10 points or fewer.

While the circumstances and importance of the rivalry game vary from season to season, this one was pretty big for Arvada West, with top-ranked Columbine looming next week.

"We get up for this game more than any other; it's always going to be that way," Arvada West wide receiver Perry Sammons said. "This win was for our seniors. It's their last shot at these guys. It's a big part of our schedule, and if we come out of it with two wins it is going to be big for us."

At 6-foot-6, Sammons easily was the biggest target on the field for quarterback Luke Campbell, and the junior made some key catches as the Wildcats improved to 4-1 in the South Metro League and overall.

In addition to a 25-yard touchdown catch that got the Wildcats on the board, Sammons caught five other passes that went for big yardage.

His final catch, of 21 yards in the fourth, quarter put his team in the red zone, and Joe Altman capped the drive with a 19-yard scoring run.

Sammons finished with 98 yards receiving, and Campbell threw for 160.

"We were a little too excited, but we settled down and started moving the ball," Sammons said. "Luke puts it there almost every time. He's making it easy for me."

Pomona's defense kept the game from being a blowout, considering that six Arvada West possessions started in Pomona territory. The Wildcats converted only two of those chances.

Pomona (3-2, 3-2) scored on its first possession in each half thanks to the accuracy of Matt Castillo. The senior completed his first nine passes, including a 37-yard bomb to Dustin Ebner that helped give Pomona a 14- 10 advantage early in the third quarter.

The Panthers, though, finished with only one other second-half drive that garnered a first down. Castillo finished with 160 passing yards, and running back Donovan Bowen was held to 48 yards on 19 carries.
