How utterly asinine :tsk:

MIAMI — Marlins rookie Scott Cousins has been receiving death threats despite repeatedly apologizing for a season-ending collision with Giants star Buster Posey .

The collision at home plate May 25 left Posey with a broken bone in his lower left leg and three torn ligaments in his ankle.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean criticized Cousins on his weekly radio show this week, calling the play malicious.

"He chose to be a hero, in my mind," Sabean said. "If that's his flash of fame, that's as good as it's going to get, pal. We'll have a long memory."

Ridiculous. It's part of the game, don't block the plate if you don't want to get clobbered.

It is friggin baseball! This play at the plate has been happening for over a hundred years now! Grow up people, jeepers!

A lot of good hitters, through the years, have been moved out of the catching position because they were deemed too valuable to be exposed to collisions behind the plate. I think Sabean now realizes that's what he should have done with Posey

BTW, does anyone besides me think "Buster Posey" is a great screen name for a porn actor?

I was a catcher through college. In high school I talked shit to Kyle Brady and paid for it later when he rounded third and eventually knocked me 10 behind the plate. I never complained and no other catcher or team has ever complained.

All of the sudden, the team and fans discussing poor sportsmanship in reference to the opening day beating of a fan are whining about this aspect of the game and sending death threats. Pathetic

from article:

West said a key part of the play had been missed in the aftermath.

"What they're failing to look at is that (Posey) dropped the ball before the guy got there," West said. "That's why he was in a vulnerable position. That's why he was trying to find the ball. If he had caught the ball, he could have got his hands up and he could have defended himself. He could have absorbed the blow with both arms and his glove.

"It's like a receiver going over the middle in football. If he bobbles the ball a couple of times, the linebacker is going to kill him."

I don't think it much matters if he bobbles the ball, it might in terms of him defending himself, but you can't stand in the way of a runner and not expect to get run over.

Here's the actual video. Pay no attention to the announcer who almost immediately assesses it as possible head to head contact when it's clearly shoulder to shoulder. I wonder how many of these death threats are from fans that were watching it on TV and immediately assumed that the announcer was right in spite of what the video actually shows. Having this announcer acknowledge his mistake might go a long ways to putting an end to this ridiculous matter.

Carlos Santana was also recently hurt in a collision. No one cares about that collision, though.

Johnny Bench has said Posey was out of position and didn't block the plate correctly. It's his own damn fault.

And death threats? Really?

Troy Tulowitzki was surprised by the question, if not the fuss. The Rockies' shortstop moved his left arm up to avoid a collision with Giants first baseman Aubrey Huff in the fourth inning when he brushed Huff's mouth. Tulo was booed lustily the remainder of the game.

"It's really nonsense that I am answering this. There was nothing intentional about it," Tulowitzki said.

What a bunch of idiots the SF fans are. :tsk::tsk::tsk:
