Some kind soul has posted almost all the 1974 NFL Game of the Week segments on Youtube. I watched all the Bronco segments, and I'm not ashamed to say I remember these games, even following them on the useless Rochester New York Democrat and Chronicle sportspages, the 11 PM News (if the game ran late I wouldn't see the final) and eventually Pro Football Weekly.

It really sucked in the days before ESPN, USA Today, etc.

Anywhoo, 1974 was supposed to be a break out season that just didn't quite come together. The Broncs had been a doormat prior to the arrival of Charley Johnson, but he was the piece that made Denver a dangerous opponent. Not yet a playoff caliber team, but no longer an "easy out." Hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Week 7. Damned Browns - we would own them someday, but not yet. The Broncos weren't good enough yet to survive playing poorly against a bad team

Week 14 is also missing, but is a disappointing 17-0 loss to the Chargers.

Better things were to come, and, if you weren't aware, boys and girls, Otis Armstrong was freakin' good

An interesting tidbit. Randy Gradishar (One of the best inside linebackers of his era who is not in the Hall of Fame ) wore number 52 his rookie season.

I just did some stat checking and our opening 3 weeks proved to be as brutal as any I've ever seen. All three opponents went to win 10 or their 14 games for an overall record of 30-11-1. We tied the Stealers who would finish that season by winning their 1st of 4 SBs over the next 6 years. We lost by 7 points to the Rams who were 12-2 the previous season and, according to the 1st clip, were preseason SB favorites that year. They would fall just 4 points short of playing the Stealers in that SB. Then there were the Redskins who would win 10 or more games for the 3rd straight season and fell 7 points short in the SB two seasons earlier. Judging by the game’s final score, all’s that I can say is, ouch!

Yes we came out of that three game stretch 0-2-1, but us beating anyone those of those 3 would have constituted a major upset.

As I wait for week 5 to buffer so I can watch it without all of the stuttering, I just have to say how stiff those commentators are. You get the impression that the only reason they took the job was for the money. Modern commentators, even the ones we find annoying, at least act like they took the job because they love football and the pay if just an added bonus. The 1st commentators that I can remember being like that were Len Dawson & Nick Buoniconti of HBO's, Inside the NFL.

Hey Tned or mods could this thread be stickyed for a little while? It's a good history lesson for younger fans. It's just a thought.
