John Elway feels sorry for Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell. The Hall of Famer sees a big, strong-armed kid who has all the physical tools to be an NFL star … but is doomed as long as he’s stuck in Oakland.

“The fastest way to ruin a quarterback is to put him on a bad team, with a bad line, with no weapons, with no continuity in the coaching staff,” Elway wrote in a column for the Sporting News (via ESPN.com). “That pretty much describes the current Raiders. The game has passed Al Davis by, and he’s the only one who doesn’t know it. Every time the Raiders get a good coach — Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden, Norv Turner, etc. — who doesn’t buy into Al’s outdated program, he fires him.

“It’s this kind of organizational instability that can ruin a quarterback, like the Texans ruined David Carr and the Browns ruined Tim Couch. A young quarterback, especially a No. 1 guy with the weight of a city’s expectations on his shoulders, can wilt. A young quarterback needs a calm, steady influence on and off the field. The first three years for an NFL quarterback are rocky no matter what. He needs a coach to teach him the game of football and a kind of father figure to nurture him and get him through the tough times off the field.

“Too bad JaMarcus didn’t have the leverage I had in 1983; then he could’ve avoided the Raiders all together. …

“I feel for JaMarcus. Physically, he has it all. He’s an unbelievable talent — strong arm, tall, big. In the right situation, he could have a great NFL career. In Oakland, he has almost no chance.”

Elway clearly isn’t unbiased here. You have to wonder whether he’d be as harsh on a franchise that wasn’t bitter rivals with the Broncos.

Having said that, it’s awfully tough to shoot any holes in his argument. After all, the biggest move Davis has made to help Russell is overpaying for a aging receiver who has serious knee problems and little desire to play football.

Tell it like it is.

Good job John.

This Russel is like the kid in the neighborhood that could peg a phone pole with a snow ball from 40 yards. The quicker it splats into the middle of the phone pole the better and this guy has great arm strength. Even their lack-luster O-line pick Gallery is coming into his own.

As Shannon Sharpe used to say even an old stray cat finds a whole chicken in the garbage can now and then and someday the Raiders are going to be a force we'll need to to deal with. With all their draft picks and all, and this new Cable guy they have as coach is bringing some discipline to the wayward bunch.

John Elway tells no lies. The sooner Al Davis either steps down or croaks, the better off the Raiders will be.

Like 99% of Raider Nation feels the same way. 85% to the exact same extent, the other 15% still think Al is the shiz.

Shhh! Someone might hear.

The longer that Big Al is in control (talk about an oxymoron) the better off the Broncos will be.

Say what we want... And Elway is a 100% correct, but Damn, we arent very good surrounding our team with good free agents either.

As long as Al Davis is running the team they wont be a force in my opinion.

Jamarcus was a big, strong QB on a GREAT LSU team, and looked like a man among boys in College...

I'm not buying into how he might be a Superstar in the NFL.....
Just cause someone has the tools (Arm-strength, size, height) doesn't mean they know how to use them in the NFL.

IE: Robert Gallery, Vernon Davis, etc..

Jamarcus has less than half a season under his belt with a offensive unit topped off with (potential) talent, and so far he looks worst than Kerry Collins did as a Raider.

Clay, the Broncos may be the most talented offensive team in the league now.
Cutler is the absolute antithesis of Russell in that area. Cutler had better thank
his lucky stars. The Raiders had a shot at him in the draft, as you remember,
only to pass.

*whew* Both Cutler and the Broncos are lucky there, aren't they?
