NEW YORK -- New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard was found dead Friday in his Minneapolis apartment. He was 28.

The team announced Boogaard's death on Friday night, but gave no details.

The Star Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis first reported Boogaard was found dead in his home by members of his family. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office in Minnesota confirmed those details and said an autopsy was pending.

"Derek was an extremely kind and caring individual," Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather said. "He was a very thoughtful person, who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time."

Why not? Once the game stops, hockey players have the most class bar none over any other professional athletes, just ask PN, they are so down to earth and accomidate the regular people.

If the rest of the hockey players are like the Avs players, I can not remember a time when one of them got in trouble off of the ice. Hockey is a very rough sport - but they don't take that with them off the ice, at least in Denver they do not.

dnc hit it right. But when was the last time you heard of an off field incident regarding any hockey players?

I can only think of two.

1. when the hawks guy--toews? maybe- punched the cab driver (2 years ago)
2. when danny heatley crashed his car and killed one of his teammates..(6-7 years ago)

hockey players have an unwritten rule. As soon as the horn sounds and the game is over...all is forgotten.

OMG I can't believe I missed this. Derek was a really nice man, I remember him with Minn. It's really sad and he was so young.

Hockey players are the very nicest athletes out there. They are just good men.

BTW UR it was Kane that got in trouble that hit the cab driver.

Honestly I can't think of one enforcer that not a total sweetheart off the ice. It's just there job to protect the other players, but they are great men. Also I think they work so hard to get into the NHL they give back as much as possible, at least that's been my experience.

Actually is was Patrick Kane. Toews has class and Kane does not.

It was Avery, one of the few jerks/punks and just over all nasty human in hockey.... Hull got in all kind of hot water in Dallas for bringing to the Stars.

It's good to see all you guys here.... I have missed you, just busy.

From, wiki so take it for what it's worth...

An autopsy was performed, the results of which a medical examiner in Minnesota ruled that Boogaard's death was accidental and was due to mixing alcohol and oxycodone.

Interesting.

I wonder why the oxy?

It had to be a lot of both. He was a big boy his body could probably tolerate a lot more than the normal
