Did anybody watch the premier of The Newsroom on HBO on Sunday?

It was created by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, Moneyball, etc.) so I had to give it a chance. It looks like it might have some promise - I like Jeff Daniels and he seems like a good fit for the lead role. As usual, the dialogue is top notch, which seems to be Sorkin's calling card.

My only critique was that some of the character's monologues were elaborate and incisive to the point of being unbelievable. It's still entertaining, but I sat there thinking that nobody in real life can rattle off 100 statistics the way a couple of the characters did. Still, if my only critique is that the dialogue borders on being unrealistically complex, I can live with that.

I had a serious response typed up to this before googling the Octonauts. Boy do I feel dumb... But I'm gonna go ahead and post it anyway:

I have a feeling some conservatives won't much care for Newsroom. Its premise seems to be a commentary/critique on everything that is wrong with the country, viewed through a broadcast newsroom. The opening scene is Jeff Daniels' character going on about how America is no longer the greatest nation, but could be. I don't know - I thought it hit the nail on the head, but I sort of pictured my dad watching it and making some comment about it being a "******* liberal" HBO series.

Finished Deadwood tonight. Very good, sometimes great. The lack of a conclusion is disappointing. But overall I can easily say it's one of my favorite series' if only for the monologues. Just brilliant, every time. There were a few story arcs that didn't work at all (in seasons 1 and 3), and season 1 took a few episodes to get its feet under itself. But season 2, barring one minor complaint, is one of the most perfect seasons of television i've seen.

Not perfect, but I admire it a) because it's a badass western, and b) because it built its characters, its setting, and its themes very very well in spite of its few shortcomings.

Now i'm gonna binge on westerns. Dollars trilogy, Yojimbo, and No Country for Old Men coming up.

Oh lawd, I was so ready for a camp VS Hearst beatdown. I bet the 4th season would have involved something of that sort.

But I still find the finale as it is to be pretty poignant regardless of the lack of a true conclusion. Not having a proper ending and leaving with the sarcastic line "Wants me to tell him something pretty" really captures the fact that the world of Deadwood was pretty much inherently not pretty. While I would've preferred another season to wrap some of the loose ends up, what they did end with ended up being a perfect representation of the show as a whole.

Mysterious stranger passing through town worried about having his plates checked by cops, check
Lesbian couple who drove all the way the **** from L.A. to Maine to take their trouble child to "camp," check
Borderline corrupt city councilman, check
Black guy running hipster, underground radio station in place where no hipster station would ever exist, check
Noisy, hot female journalist married to cheating doctor, check

And that was the first half hour.

I haven't actually watched under the dome, that was just an example that came to my mind of a show that worked after introducing a BUNCH early on. I think it was season 3 before I could actually name every major character in BSG.

LOL Mo... I actually used the exact word "intrigued" last night when I was talking to the wife about that show.

I am interested enough in it to keep watching but I agree that there was just too much going on and they didnt get too deep into any one of them. I get they have to introduce and develop the characters but it just seemed too much and too hurried. Let's hope they decide to slow it down and focus on one thing at a time, maybe only delve into one or two of the plot lines each episode (like Lost).

Great show about a woman who spends one year in prison for carrying a bag of drugs for her lesbian lover nearly a decade earlier. I bought season 1 about a month ago. Haven't watched any of it because I am nervous about the content affecting me. Dont know if I will end up watching it.

I'm in the same boat as you. I was able to watch the first episode and it didn't have that type of an effect on me. Granted, last time I ever saw the stuff was over 10 years ago so I think it's well out of my system.

Have you ever watched Eureka? The two shows briefly have crossover characters at times. Eureka is a REALLY good show. I would recommend it if you have not seen it.

I'm debating on that or Battlestar Galatica. Whenever Fargo was on WH13 it was a good episode.

Holy shit BSG is so good. I don't even know which show to recommend you watch first. I love them both. BSG might be the best show I have ever seen. I'm currently re-watching it. But yeah, I would definitely make those your next two shows.

King, I'm a season into Warehouse 13 now. I am completely hooked. It has many qualities of the x-files, which is one of my favorite shows as well.

You're going to really like the constant flux of character development. Plus every woman in that show, sans the old ones, have very shapely legs.

It's not what I'm watching, but what I'm going to be watching....Dread mentioned Achilles in another thread so I think I'm going to be watching Troy tonight or tomorrow night. Love that movie!!!

Looking forward to a new episode of the "The Bridge" tonight. That show is captivating. The cast has been excellent, and it's very well written. Has anyone else been watching it?

King, I'm caught up on WH13 now. SUCH a good show! I think this show did the whole "relationship between lead male and female character" trope better than any show I have ever seen. I'm sad that there are only 6 episodes left in the series.

It's really, really, really good. They could have easily gotten another three or four good to great seasons out of that show.

Agreed. It's a crime that SyFy is getting rid of it. Still so many places they could go with the various characters.
