BRONCOS SNIFF AROUND KICKERS, PUNTERS
Posted by Mike Florio on October 22, 2008, 8:11 a.m.
So what’s the best way to recover from a 34-point defeat on Monday Night Football?

Well, how about trying out new kickers and punters?

That’s precisely what the Broncos did on Tuesday after they returned to Denver from Massachusetts. Specifically, three kickers (Billy Cundiff, Piotr Czech, Garrett Hartley) and two punters (Josh Miller, Scott Player) had tryouts with the team.

The decision to sniff around specialists seems odd, since the special teams are the least of the 4-and-3-and-fading Broncos’ problems.

Currently, the Denver kicker is Matt Prater, a rookie with a strong leg who has missed only one field goal in 14 tries. The punter is Brett Kern, a rookie who boasts an average of 48.8 yards and a net of 40.7.

Another possibility is that Prater and/or Kern are secretly injured. (But NFL teams don’t hide injuries, do they?)

Then there’s the chance that the Broncos are looking for a kickoff specialist. But Prater has had 12 touchbacks in seven games.

Anyway, it just seems odd that, on the day after a 41-7 thrashing by the Pats, the Broncos would be worried about one aspect of their roster that, unlike the offense and the defense, has been getting the job done on a consistent basis.

What the hell is going on here?????

Good question.

What? Prater and Kern have been pretty damn solid if you ask me.

I have never know what the hell goes on inside Dove Valley from a personnel standpoint, and this is no different...

Our defense is in shambles, our backup QB is out for the year, and our franchise corner is out for over a month with a torn groin...

So what do we do? Sign a WR and work out punters.

******* mind boggling.

. . .and why do we need to bring Hartley back especially? He was here most of the summer. . .

Weird.

I just thought of something...maybe the Broncos plan to bring in all sorts of scrubs to try and show that nobodies job is safe. You know, a sorta scare tactic to get people to pull their heads out of their asses and fix their attitude.

That is the only reason I can think of that we would bringing in scrubs at positions we already have pretty solidified.

Prater has been super solid this year IMO.

Stupid. Shanahan and Bowlen have their heads firmly planted up one another's cornhole.

Yeah, I have been a big shanny supporter over the years, but this year there is just to much crazy shit going on in Denver. Things seem very erratic without a real sense of direction/purpose.

Take they things you mentioned and then add to that:

1. Signing/trading for players like Robertson and Boss (both 4-3 players) and then switching to the 3-4 on a whim.

2. Drafting a MLB (Larsen) and switching him to FB when we already have a quality FB and are in desperate need of help at the MLB position.

There were a few other things I was thinking about during the last game, as well. But they escape me at the moment.

Like you said, ******* mind boggling

SOP = standard operating procedure

It happens every week in every NFL city. They randomly hold try outs usually at one position (this week kickers) to keep an idea of what is out there in case of injury.

Nothing to really see here

I wondered if it wasn't something that had been scheduled prior. This makes the most sense.

Does anyone else find it odd that they are bringing in players at every position on offense and special teams, and none on defense as of yet?

Maybe he should just try to let Jarvis Moss kick and Matt Prater play DE or OLB.

yes like dortoh said

every single week we are trying out new players and new positions. Even if we dont need them.

We gave a look at qbs not too long ago. Safties, corners, wr,-- each and every week we evaluate players......

This is just written because there is nothing else to write about.

conversely mikey has nothing better to do with his time but look at players we do not need.. Does he really think he is going to find another gem in the waste bin.. someone better than what we have..

I suggest that mikey brings in safeties, DE's and DT's and maybe even a MLB or two to see if someone can find warm bodies better than those on the team.. Do you think that might light a fire under those clowns on the field as we speak??

BETTER YET let mikey start interviewing Defensive coaches during the bye week.. That is where we seem to have the issue..

May as well bring in Kennison if we're gonna start signing quitters.

I hope we Bring in Crocker, he's better than anyone we have at Saftey right now.

"Goodness. More roster maneuvers, for performance reasons, may be forthcoming. The Broncos are interested in safety Chris Crocker, who was cut Tuesday by Miami. Crocker was one of three free-agent safeties who visited with the Broncos in March. The Broncos decided to sign Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel, who opened the season as starters. McCree was replaced in the starting lineup last week by Calvin Lowry".

I don't understand this at all, they don't have time for this bull****. After watching the postgame with Shanahan, I didn't get the impression at all that there needed to be changes made on defense. The impression I got from him is that they need to keep working on it to get better. I expect no personel or staff changes at all over the bye week.

you guys are crazy. every team does this every week. ITs part of being a coach or a gm or in shannies case both. You work out players and sniff players all the time.

Yes, defensive everything needs help, but do any of you REALLY THINK THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT GOT SKIPPED OVER, THAT CAN COME IN HERE AND CHANGE THINGS????????????

Our guys suck, and so does the waste out there in FA. No one is going to be a star or a fix. We need draft and big name FA. Thats the only way to get talent to fix our problems. Who cares who we bring in for a workout.

Honestly.

You are all going to have to wait and deal with it. Draft day will take care of a lot of these problems, but nothing until then.

The bandwagon seems empty, but you all can stil join us on the TEAM BUS if you dare.

IMO we need to work out the guys ALREADY ON THE ROSTER and spend time teaching them the basics like making proper reads, filling the proper gaps, reading a ball carriers hips, wrapping up the legs, playing the ball, shedding blocks, etc.

I know it is standard operations to work out FA's, but this is the time of the season that we need to adjust our standards and right the ship. Who cares about what is available on the market at K and punter anyways? We have those positions solidified for the next 10 years and those have been the only consistant positives so far this year.

Get these fools on the practice field and bust their asses until they get what it takes to win in this league. Hang onto the damn football and wrap up the ball carrier!!!!!!!!!!! Crack the whip on these underachievers. Show a sense of urgency. This "oh we will just have to get better with time" crap is not cutting it. Show some damn passion for once.

I don't have a problem with keeping the normal schedule and working out some players on the team's off-day if that's what's happening. I don't think that the entire coaching staff and team is missing out on practice time to work these players out.

This is one of those due dilligence type things that if they don't do it and Prater gets hurt, then we're all bitching about how come they didn't have a back-up plan.

Good point, but kickers seem like a dime-a-dozen in this league. I guess this thread in general is kind of dumb if this is something that happens with every team, every week.

If Kern got hurt I would think we could just bring Paulescu back in.

I am more interested in hearing what is going on with the actual team in practice this week and next rather than what scrubs we are working out just to stay in the loop of the league.

I knew he broke his foot or something on that OT play but I had not seen who they signed to take his place. Looks like he got a lot of work on Sunday against the Rams

not surprising...
Shanahan see's his team give up over 40 points and only muster up 7 points and loses a QB, LB and CB, the obvious choice is to find a new kicker!

Seems about right, Shanny is losing it.
