If you were picking for the Broncos, what would you do with the second pick in the draft?
— Buzz, Fort Collins

JL: Good question Buzz. My instinct right now tells me that they are likely to trade back in the draft because the Broncos need an infusion of youth. And they need help up front.

Where I started to see the Broncos unravel was up front. I'm a huge believer that you have to be strong up the middle and up front. When I first came here, we had Trevor Pryce and Reggie Hayward on the D-line and we were looking pretty good. But we lost that talent up front.

I mean, you can play with Hall of Famers in your defensive backfield, but if you don't have talent up front, you can't stop people. I think the Broncos have been putting a band aid on this issue for a long time. It's something that needs to be addressed.

Taking (Auburn defensive lineman) Nick Fairley would be my gut instinct. I know there are some character issues - people say the guy takes plays off - but he just took over that national championship game against Oregon. Just took it over. I played with a guy like that in Tampa - Warren Sapp - and guys like that don't come around very often.

I live in Brazil and have been a Broncos fan for a long time! Now that Champ Bailey is re-signed, what do you think we need to do in order to get that secondary back to being dominant? Do you believe Perrish Cox and Syd'Quan Thompson are the answer or should the Broncos go out and get a big-time prospect such as (Louisiana State's ) Patrick Peterson or free agent such as (Oakland's) Nnamdi Asomugha?
— Brian, Joćo Pessoa, Brazil

JL: I would answer you the same way I answered the other question. The best way to get better in the back end is to get better in the front end. All the players they have in the defensive backfield will get better when they start getting pressure up front. Patrick Peterson is a great player, but I think they have to finally address the issue up front.

so don't take it from me-- take it from the potential defensive hall of famer who actually played here. . . think he knows something about how a defense is built?

he answers a number of other questions in the interview, but those two are obviously relevant to my interests. . .

Great interview. I love lynch and his ability to articulate. Such a smart guy, the Nfl is lacking those now. Would not mind one bit if he decided to come here to our FO in some fashion. Though he would probably do it with tampa.

Such a smart guy,

i will never forgive him for standing there barking at one of our other guys while reggie wayne got up and ran in untouched for the score in that playoff game. . .

Wasnt that the game where the wr was on the ground and lynch wanted to hit him but the ref said he would have called hitting defenseless receiver, so lynch tried to touch him but the wr got up before he could touch him and ran in?

Or was that a different one. It happened on the right side of the field but I do not remember who it was we were playing..Maybe it was atlanta.

It most definetely was Al Wilson. I remember that play like yesterday. I will always remember that play. I was saying "WTF are you doing Wilson" before Wayne even started getting up.

That's what I tried to post... this is a different source... hope it works now.

U29... our defense had issues back in those days... but they didn't suck. We thought it did... but we didn't understand what suck was at the time. Defense was actually really above average for a while... but with no rings, people get impatient.

Al Wilson (assuming everyone else also forgets the aforementioned play that shall not be mentioned again) led pretty good units in his time, but he will be lost in the annals as a guy who was overrated on a defense that nobody liked.

He was defensive back to boot and still says that you build a defense line first.

I couldn't agree more that a defense is built up front and in the middle. However, I was originally on the Fairley band wagon but the more I find out about him the more picking him worries me. Presently I want Darius and followed soon by the pick of a Mike LB.

Yea, i dont remember Lynch being there on that play.

But, to the article. Lynch is a 100% correct and ive been stating it all along. He of all people stated the obvious and the troubles it gives the backfield when you dont have the talent up front to make a difference.

You also notice he said "We HAD Price and Heywood when I first got here...."

You're both right. It was 2 different occasions. The one with Al Wilson was Marvin Harrison catching one over the middle and going down. All the Broncos stopped and Wilson started scolding the LBs and secondary. Nobody touched Harrison down so he just got up and ran into the endzone.

I'm pretty sure it was the following year (Lynch and Champ's first IIRC) when Lynch had Wayne all lined up for a big shot and let up on him but Wayne (who was previously on the ground) was just starting to get up when Lynch "touched him down" so he scored, too.

Sucks that it happen twice against the same team (as if their offense needed any more gifts from us).
