Fan beaten at Dodger game may have brain damage

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A San Francisco Giants fan who was beaten at Dodger Stadium after last week's opening game shows signs of brain damage and remains in critical condition, a doctor said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, detectives were looking into unconfirmed reports that the same suspects struck other Giants fans minutes before the attack that left Bryan Stow in a coma.

Stow, a 42-year-old paramedic and father of two from Santa Cruz, remained in critical but guarded condition at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. He suffered a severe skull fracture and bad bruising to his brain's frontal lobes, said Dr. Gabriel Zada, a neurosurgeon.

They were talking about this on dan patrick show this morning. They said Dodger stadium is a bad place and no place to take a family. They talked about Oakland and some bronco fan who stood up in a bronco jersy and cheered a denver touchdown and some dude walked over to him and laid him out with a punch to the face. Craxzy. People need to lighten up. Geezo, its a sport. People need to Get a life. I hope they catch the guys who did it.

and they want to give that city an NFL team. It is amazing what people can turn into, assuming the guy didn't go to the game planning to destroy a person and his family.

Probably not but according to the article he was abusive towards other people as well...or so they think.

But that is the problem. Boo someone wearing the wrong jersey is one thing but to assult, spit on or throw drinks at them is pathetic

These teams need to do a better job of cracking down on gangs and thugs attending their games, instead of turning the other way until someone gets critically injured (like in this case) or ends up dead.

Many of us are hoping that somehow, what happened to Bryan Stow becomes a turning point in the problem of fan violence. Here's an example of some Southern Californians showing some initiative:

A community vigil in support of Bryan Stow, the victim of a beating in the Dodger Stadium parking lot after last week's opening game, is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. PT at the Los Angeles County Medical Center.

The vigil's grass-roots sponsors, which include the Garfield High School Healthy Start Collaborative, East Los Angeles Prevention Project and the Latino Equality Alliance, are supporting Stow's recovery while also taking a stand against the violence of his attack. Stow has been in a medically induced coma for the past several days.

He suffered a severe skull fracture and bad bruising to his brain's frontal lobes, Dr. Gabriel Zada, a neurosurgeon, said Tuesday.

At one point, doctors had to remove the entire left side of his skull to ease pressure on his brain. The pressure is now normal but Stow remains in a coma from his injuries and from sedation to reduce his brain activity, Zada said.

"There is evidence of brain injury and dysfunction," Zada said.

It was reported Tuesday that Stow, a San Francisco Giants fan, sent a text message while inside the stadium to family indicating that he was scared of what might happen to him.

I'm in LA on vacation as we speak and I will say that the astronomically high population of human filth that inhabits this shit hole is absolutely amazing. If all the Aliens see is California, we are doomed. They will see no reason to show us mercy.

I am sickened and embarrassed to call myself a Dodger fan after something like this.

I attend at least 10 games a year, I am an avid fan...I have seen first hand how some of these scumbags treat visiting team fans..Fortunately, it's only a small contingency...All made up of "Cholo" type thugs who litter the bleachers with their ugly language and gang related demeanor. Problem is, there is a all you can eat section in the bleachers where, hotdogs, nachos and sodas are free..So these ******** throw food at opposing fans all throughout the game and if the person says anything in retaliation, then it gets out of hand and people get escorted out...That's the worst Ive seen. But what I do know is these "cholo" pieces of shit are the ones to blame...Many decent fans attend and barely any situations like this occur other than in the bleachers and parking lots...Where these viruses continue to poison our society.

Depends on where you are at. You do not want to be a Bengals, Ravens or Steelers fan at a Cleveland game (although you will probably see your team win  ).

On the other hand, I haven't heard many horror stories about Cleveland fans at Cincy, Pitt or Balt games.

It's always a risk at a game. In Springfield Illinois, there are a couple bars known as 'Steeler' bars, and from personal experience I can tell you that on Sunday if your team is playing Pitt you do NOT want to go there.

Some people get so jacked up or live through their team vicariously so much that they almost cease being a human being and turn into an ignorant slobbering animal.

You throw alcohol into the mix and it can get really bad.

Philadelphia fans, who as a whole are truly ignorant, are so bad that they have a friggen COURT ROOM under their stadium.

that's nuts, but I think violent people use fandom to leverage their assaults. They're not true fans. on Philly, I've heard bad things about that stadium (in regards to violence from the fans). I heard they had a jail cell under the stadium, but not a court room. where did you hear that?

I suspect that all stadiums have holding cells in them and have for years. Since the advent of beer there are always drunks to contend with.
If the Place has police there will be some type of detention areas.

LOS ANGELES - New security measures at Dodger Stadium will be announced today, eight days after an attack in a stadium parking lot left San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow in a coma.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck, who is set to attend the news conference at the Police Administration Building along with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Dodger owner Frank McCourt, said Thursday that "if you go to that homestand next week, you're going to see a sea of blue, and it's not gonna be Dodger blue, it's gonna be LAPD blue."

"People will be awed by the response of the Los Angeles Police Department, because we will not suffer this as a city again," Beck said.

The Dodgers will pay for the increased police presence at the stadium, a team official told the Los Angeles Times.

The Dodgers will next play at Dodger Stadium Thursday.

Security at Dodger Stadium was increased in 2005, including the first deployment of LAPD officers in the history of the stadium, which opened in 1962, after fans in outfield seats littered the field with debris in response to the arrest of two teenage boys who had gone onto the outfield during a short- lived "$2 True Blue Tuesdays" promotion.

Police have received 80 tips in the case and interviewed some witnesses, said Deputy Chief Jose Perez Jr., the lead investigator. The clues have not led to any suspects "that we can identify and arrest," Perez said.

I agree with Benetto, remember I live in Boston so I do not see this behavior. At Boston games it can get bad as well but for the most part it is some mouth behavior, not assault.

I hope the guy is okay.

I love the Dodgers (probably as much as people in LA or even more than some) but dont condo this embarassing behavior.

A suspect in the Opening Day beating of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow at Dodger Stadium is in custody, police said.

The suspect was among several people detained for questioning after police served search warrants in the case, Los Angeles Police Det. Jose Carillo said. Police said he was one of two suspects that have been sought in the case.

It's unclear whether the others detained possible witnesses or suspects in the March 31 beating that left Stow with brain damage, police said.

A Los Angeles police SWAT team took the suspect into custody early Sunday morning at an apartment building in East Hollywood, according to the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the development.

Great news, and within article, more arrests made = does not look like the first guy arrested is guilty

Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan who was brutally beaten at Dodger Stadium on Opening Day, opened his eyes, tried to give a thumb's up with his right hand and even mouthed his last name, according to a message posted on the family's website.

Family members were told by hospital staff that Stow had an eventful Friday morning. He opened and closed his eyes on command and the milestones were witnessed by his nurse and a neurosurgeon. By the time family members arrived, Stow had been sedated and was resting.

"As always with these steps forward, we are aware that it's intermittent, and there will still be some steps back," the family said on the website. "Even before the surgery, when he was at his best, his response to commands were not consistent. We remain cautiously optimistic."

Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan who was brutally beaten on Opening Day at Dodger Stadium, can lift his arms and legs and respond to commands, his family said on their website.

"He lifted his left leg slightly when asked, he raised his left arm everytime we asked if we could hold his hand," the site said.

The site said the "best part" was when Stow's sister Bonnie asked if she could give him a kiss and "every time she asked him, he puckered his lips."
