Charlie Batch, Backup Steelers Quarterback, Could Lose Super Bowl Rings In Bankruptcy

Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Charlie Batch has other things to worry about besides the labor battle with NFL owners.

Brian Bowling of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported on Wednesday that Batch, who filed for bankruptcy in December, could have his Super Bowl rings seized along with several other items of personal property.

If the NFLPA and NBAPA were really about helping players, they would conduct mandatory classes for all rookies about how to handle money and give them some contacts to help them manage their financial assets.

The NFL hosts an annual rookie symposium where they do exactly that.

In this case...we're talking about Batch..hardly a rookie...if he doesn't know by now where to go for good financial advice..then it's all on him and not the NFL.

I know reasons why a pro athlete's money evaporates faster than you'd think but I don't understand how it vanishes altogether. Of course, alimony/child support/being a target for every golddigger and ambulance chaser has something to do with it but you gotta watch your money better than that.

And it's not like every former player is destitute - we hear stories occassionally of guys blowing through their cash, but many of them set money aside and invest their money and/or live comfortably for the rest of their (shortened) lives.
