View Full Version : Adrian Peterson: Players' place in NFL like 'modern-day slavery'

WOW Adrian Peterson sure put his foot in his mouth because according to this and other articles:

Adrian Peterson joined fellow players in decrying the negotiating tactics of NFL owners in the current labor battle.

Yet the Minnesota Vikings running back used an unusual analogy to describe the status of players, who were locked out by owners on Saturday after negotiations fell apart last week.

Peterson told Yahoo Sports:

"It's modern-day slavery, you know?"

I don't know many "slaves" who can afford to play $5,000/hand at 3 card poker at Caesar's Palace in Vegas like he does. Hell, he played for hours and lost probably $50,000 and acted like it was dropping a penny on the floor.

way to drop the slave card, i guess next white players should liken it to british tyrrany and the jewish players call the owners nazis. what the hell is going on anymore!

I knew there was a reason I hated NFL ball. College FTW, you will never see this shit happen in college. Saturday tailgates, tradition, pagentry, games played with passion by kids playing a GAME. Thats something I can feel good about. Its more innocent, its more passionate, its more pure IMO. You just cant compair the college atmosphere with the NFL and their 8 dollar beers and their grey, dead, corperate commercialism. Now idk about the packers cuz they seem to be a small market but the Jags atmosphere SUCKS

Too bad my fav player has to play in this league... IMO **** the NFL

All people who work for an employer is somewhat "like slavery". The boss tells you to do things you might not feel like doing and you feel you have no choice but to do it.

"But employees get a paycheck", you might say.

Well, the slaves of the Old South got food and a roof over their heads and often got jobs for their family members thanks to the "master".

And, when it comes to pro sports, most players have to start their careers where they were drafted, given no choice in the matter.

But, in all seriousness, comparing life in the NFL to the slavery of the Old South is just ignorance. It does a disservice to all the people, largely of his own race, who suffered genuine slavery where one's entire existence was controlled by someone else.

This is why the players want the NFL to provide health care. They make enough money that they should be able to afford private insurance for the rest of their lives, but they don't know how to save the money themselves. So they need the NFL to do it for them.

What a joke....These guys are so out of touch.

I guarantee you that the owners are thrilled that AP said this because they all know that he just turned public opinion against the players. What really baffles me the most is how it is that the players haven't figured out yet that these kinds of statements alienate fans? If I was in a leadership position in the players union, I would make sure that this was clearly explained to every rookie that comes into the league. I would make sure player in contract negotiations was reminded of this. So by the time the new collective bargaining period begins, maybe these players might actually know how to conduct themselves in a way that doesn't turn the fan base against them.

SR
03-15-2011, 06:56 PM
I wouldn't go so far as to say it alienates the fans. If anything, it just makes the fans realize what a giant bunch of ungrateful pussies some of the NFL players are.

Agreed totally - a great big steaming diaper load if ever there was one. I'm at about the point where I'd rather lose the season than see the NFLPA win.

PS - AP now goes on my unwritten douchebag list

PPS - I have now agreed with Buff on multiple posts. Prepare yourselves, all, and get your affairs in order. Its a sign of end times.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it alienates the fans. If anything, it just makes the fans realize what a giant bunch of ungrateful pussies some of the NFL players are.

There was a handful of fans taking the players' side up until now. How many of them are coming to AP's defense? How many have joined in on the dogpile?

Although I'm one of those who sees this as a battle between millionaires & billionaires, I did at least believe that the players have a valid point that the owners should open up the books. After all, the players are entitled to 60% of the profits and they should have the right to verify that the owners profit reports are accurate. I find the owners unwillingness to allow such verification to be troubling.

AP's comments don't in anyway change my view of the players; it does however justify me not siding with them completely. Nevertheless, I just lost a lot of respect for AP as a person.

They say there is wisdom in the multitude of counsel. With that in mind, if the
two would have consulted each other and Travis Henry and Maurice Clarett,
then they might have come to different conclusions . . .

P.S. I didn't intentionally exclude George Rogers, who said, "“I want to rush for

Take about 2grand a year per year at age 20 saves becomes about a million at age 60 at about 6% compounded interest.

Depends on what kind of account you put your money in to and how long you put it in. I've had my Roth IRA since I was 14 and maxed it out every year for the past 12. I'll probably stop putting money in somewhere in the next 10-12 years. I'll be set when retirement comes.
