SAN DIEGO – Offensive players facing the Chargers this season cringed Wednesday upon hearing San Diego signed high-profile free agent safety Bob Sanders.

The former Defensive Player of the Year built a reputation with the Indianapolis Colts as one of the hardest-hitting players in the NFL, earning Pro Bowl selections in ’05 and ’07.

“We are all very excited to add Bob Sanders to our defense,” General Manager A.J. Smith said. “We have always held him in high regard. He’s a smart, physical, instinctive player. His intensity and playmaking ability can make an immediate impact on our defense.”

For about three games a year he's one of the best players in the league.

Looks like they are giving up on weddle by this signing.

Let's hope he winds up in DEN.

I would love to see Weddle in Denver. It would be a great pickup.

Cost you a 1st round pick...

Bob Sanders is a pure upgrade if it works out with his health. We tendered both our safeties from last year. Weddle with a 1st round tender and Oliver with a 4th I believe. So we did NOT give up on anyone IMHO.

The Chargers placed a first-round tender on safety Eric Weddle. Others that received tenders include linebacker Antwan Applewhite, tackle Jeromey Clary and running back Mike Tolbert (second round); cornerback Dante Hughes (third round); linebacker Antwan Barnes and safety Paul Oliver (fourth round); and linebacker Brandon Siler (seventh round).

Is he a RFA or UFA? Did he sign the tender?

Currently, it takes six accrued seasons for a player to become unrestricted. But a new CBA is expected to revert to the previous rules that qualify a player for unrestricted free agency after four seasons.

Weddle has 4 seasons in the NFL. You want to bet its going to cost us a 1st rounder?

We shall see ... All that is sure right now is that both our safeties have been tendered.

If Sanders is healthy and that is a big IF that is a great pickup for you.

If is the key word and the chances are according to history he wont stay on the field enough to make a big impact.
