WASHINGTON — A person with knowledge of the NFL labor talks tells The Associated Press that the league and the union are discussing the possibility of extending the deadline for the end of the current collective bargaining agreement.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the federal mediator overseeing the negotiations wants the proceedings kept private.

The league and players' union are meeting for a 10th day with a federal mediator. The current CBA is due to expire at midnight.

Someone please help me understand this.

If the CBA is NOT extended, and the NFLPA goes ahead and decertifies, can (or will) the NFL set up a free agency period while the CBA negotiations (or player lawsuits) are in limbo?

An extension of the talks toward a new collective bargaining agreement between NFL owners and the players' union is "definitely a possibility", two sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The owners made a significant enough proposal to the players Thursday which may be enough to "stop the clock" and continue negotiations on a new CBA that would delay a work stoppage, sources said. The union is awaiting answers on some core issues to determine whether there will be an agreement to extend negotiations beyond the midnight deadline.

The talks between the sides were scheduled to end at 1 p.m. ET but they are still ongoing.

A lockout at this point is inevitable. Crazy.

I never thought it'd get to this point unfortunately. Already went through this once with the NHL lockout in 2005.... not again, damn it.

The fact that they are going past the scheduled time has to be positive. I know it's basically pointless to hope something gets done soon, but at least they feel there is enough to discuss to keep it going today.

The owners are trying to prevent the union from decertifying. Most likely this is to buy them some extra time to exhaust all their options on preventing the union to decertify.

The owners have prepared 3 years for a lockout, and have already been on record as stating they will sacrifice an entire season to get a CBA in place that will favor what they want.

Hopefully this extension gives them enough time to see they are cornered and give a little which will prevent a lockout.

There will be NO Free Agency without a new CBA.
The union has come out and said they NFL wasn't specific enough in their wording, so decertification is still" on".
On a more positive note...
Meanwhile, the Pres. that hates people who make more than he does, wont help alleviate rising gas prices and sucks even worse on foreign affairs, threatens his involvement if they dont on their own.
All for a freak'n game, that really shouldn't even be talked about on Capitol Hill, in our current environment.

Except that if the union de-certifies and the players file the anti-trust lawsuit, they will win because the NFL is a monopoly and the NFL can be forced to pay the players at 3X their normal salary until a new CBA is reached.

That, in itself, may be enough to force the owners' hand, especially now that they aren't getting their TV money. Who knows. I could care less about the owners' money and the players' money. I just want a football season... that includes the offseason (the draft, FA, trades, etc).

WASHINGTON -- The NFL and NFL Players Association are discussing the subject of "stopping the clock" on the current collective bargaining agreement to allow more time to negotiate, sources with knowledge of the situation said Thursday.

Nothing is official at this point, but there momentum is buiilding to "stopping the clock," according to sources involved with the negotiations. Things could change, but several sources indicated that possibility has grown more likely through the afternoon with this session now going on eight hours long.

"Stopping the clock" would allow the sides to continue discussing a new deal beyond Thursday's 11:59 p.m. ET deadline and would, in essence, begin a period of no football activity -- halting any player transactions.

Sources indicated 5:30 p.m. ET as a key time to get paperwork done and agree to a timeframe for the extension of the negotiating window. U.S. District Judge Dave Doty is in his chambers in Minnesota, and is prepared to review whatever is put his way. However, Todd Winter, one of Doty's law clerks, said Doty's office would not be commenting on anything regarding the CBA negotiations at this time.

Doty would have to sign-off on any extension before it becomes valid.

WASHINGTON -- The NFL and NFL Players Association agreed Thursday to a 24-hour extension of the negotiating window for a new collective bargaining agreement, sources told NFL Network's Kara Henderson.

Momentum to approve the idea of "stopping the clock" built throughout Thursday as the sides met for over eight hours in front of federal mediator George Cohen.

The original expiration date for the current CBA had been 11:59 p.m. ET Thursday. Now the union's deadline to possibly decertify is 4 p.m. ET Friday, according to NFL Network's Albert Breer.

The 24-hour extension could very well lead to a longer extension, according to a league source.

Heard this on the radio today on my way home:

Without the NFL, the owners would still be Billionaires. The players? Just a bunch of big dudes.

Kinda funny... they go months/years without agreeing on a single thing...
then when they get backed up against the wall...
they can only agree on a 24 hour extension of disagreeing with each other.
(DOH - slaps forhead)

Idiots.

In the end... they will make some kind of deal.
It could take 10 months...
10 weeks...
or 10 days.

Heck they could do it in 10 minutes if they wanted to.

Instead... they posture and preen and pose...
causing stress and tension throughout the NFL world..
employees, fans, tv networks, families, etc...

all because of their massive EGOS.

Ridonkulous. :tsk:

Frankly, I couldn't care less. My life doesn't revolve around a game. I'm sure I'll find something better to do on sundays....wife will be happy.
Listening to people call in on Sirius NFL, pissed off like THEY'RE not being paid/locked out. They were taking this lockout talk PERSONALLY! But that really made me take a step back and realize this IS jus a game, and regardless of games, my life wont be affected.

If they weren't why would they even consider putting off the desertification? As I understand it, decert'g is their 'line in the sand'...a last resort to keep the NFL from locking out.
This gives them time to decide if 7-10 more days will be fruitful. Union people are saying there's been more movement in last 24hrs than the last 2yrs.

WASHINGTON -- The NFL Players Association informed the league during Thursday's bargaining session that it would begin the decertification process on Friday, according to sources, unless the league agreed to a 10-day extension of the talks.

Friday's 24-hour extension was, in essence, to allow Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league's lawyers sufficient time to determine if the owners were willing to push the deadline back and "stop the clock" on the collective bargaining agreement for a longer period of time.

The NFL gathered with mediator George H. Cohen on Friday morning to discuss terms of an extension of talks that would allow for an additional 10 days of negotiation before the expiration of the current CBA.

WASHINGTON -- Use a 24-hour extension to get a longer reprieve. That appeared to be the approach for the NFL and the players' union Friday.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and several league executives arrived at the offices of federal mediator George Cohen in the morning, with the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire at 11:59 p.m. ET. Both groups agreed to a 24-hour extension on Thursday, with another extension on the agenda.

Each side was expected to meet separately with Cohen before any negotiations would be held.

Cohen's office sports an 86% success rate......and doesn't want the NFL's impasse to be part of its 14%.

They are now reporting on NFL Network that they've extended the deadline a week to next Friday, 11 March.

This is a good thing. It means they are closer together than farther apart. Hopefully this stuff gets done before a lockout.

WASHINGTON -- Sources have indicated that the NFL Players Association and the league are close to announcing a seven-day extension of talks on a new collective bargaining agreement, one day after the sides agreed to a 24-hour extension of the expiration of the current CBA.

Negotiations are expected to resume Monday, with the sides taking the weekend off, according to a league source. The seven-day clock would not stop in that case, meaning the sides will have five more days of negotiations, lasting through Friday, March 11.

The NFLPA informed the league during Thursday's bargaining session that it would begin the decertification process on Friday, according to sources, unless the league agreed to a 10-day extension of the talks. The sides appear to have compromised on seven days.
