wow. . . it looks like jerry sloan is leaving utah. . .

Honz is gonna be crushed. . .

UPDATE 2:38 pm: This is about as official as it will get until Sloan steps up to the podium, Jazz players are calling their agents saying Sloan is out, according to a tweet from Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Most expect Ty Corbin to get the job.

The press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Utah (5 p.m. Eastern). It will be shown live on NBA.com.

1:44 pm: Long-time Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan will resign at a press conference in a couple hours, according to a tweet from the Deseret News.

Sloan is the longest tenured coach in the NBA, having taken over back in 1988. Sloan, 68, just announced days ago that he had signed a one-year extension with the team. Reports are assistant Phil Johnson also is stepping down.

We say stepping down, although we wonder how much he was pushed out the door. As much as an institution like Sloan could be forced to do anything in Utah.

From article dog posted:

Wednesday night Sloan, usually one of the fastest coaches to the post-game media interview, was more than 30 minutes late and appeared “shaken” when he arrived. When asked about it Sloan said he, General Manager Kevin O’Connor and the rest of the staff had a post-game meeting but would not go into details. He said the media would be informed Thursday of what was discussed.

This news comes after the Jazz lost to Chicago at EnergySolutions Arena on Wednesday, with ex-Jazz players Kyle Korver and Ronnie Brewer helping the Bulls escape Utah with a 91-86 win.

After the game, Sloan didn't come out of his office for a postgame interview until more than a half-hour after his team lost for the 10th time in 14 games. Utah has struggled lately, falling to 31-23 after a 15-5 start.

Sloan usually talks to reporters between 5-10 minutes after the final buzzer, but he had been in a discussion with general manager Kevin O'Connor.

"We just had something we had to discuss," Sloan said, "and we'll talk to you all later on about that."

Speculation was that the Jazz were talking about a trade.

The shocking resignation came two days after the 68-year-old Sloan confirmed that he had signed a one-year extension to remain the Jazz's head coach through the 2011-12 season.

Sloan’s relationship with point guard Deron Williams had grown progressively worse over the course of the season, league sources said, and the coach had tired of dealing with the team’s best player. The frustration escalated on Wednesday night when Sloan and Williams clashed in the locker room at halftime.

“He decided right there in halftime that he was done,” a league source told Yahoo! Sports. “He felt like ownership was listening more to Williams than they were to him anymore. He was done.”

One source said Sloan had become tired of Williams “blaming everything on everyone else.”
