I would bet my bottom dollar, that none other than Ted Sundquist has been in the ear of our little detractor el-favorite, Mike Florio, editor of ProFootballTalk. Sundquist knows what he sees, and also knows what Shanahan can do with the weapons he now has.........read on:

Broncos, not Chargers, appear to be best in AFC West

Though I'm a firm believer in ignoring the outcome of the first weekend of NFL games, I just can't ignore the outcome of one game in particular.
Based on their 27-point win at Oakland, the Denver Broncos (http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/teams/broncos/index.html) could be the surprise team of the 2008 season.
"Surprise" might be too strong of a word, given that the Broncos generally have been good, for the most part, under coach and de facto G.M. Mike Shanahan. But last season, Denver was 7-9 and missed the postseason for the second straight year, and entering this season the Chargers looked to be the best team by far in the AFC West.
That was before the Chargers choked to those chronic underachievers from Charlotte, and before the Broncos beat the worst team money can buy, the Oakland Raiders.
Denver's win wasn't completely unexpected. Though Oakland owner Al Davis broke the bank in an effort to get competitive, no one seriously expected the Raiders to be really, really good. But maybe they're also not really, really bad; maybe the Broncos are simply going to be a lot better than expected.
The key to the rebirth of the Broncos could be the emergence of the newest bona fide franchise quarterback, Jay Cutler (javascript:fantasyPopup('nfl', 7760)).
Cutler generated a passer rating of 88.1 in 2007, despite suffering from a case of undiagnosed Type I diabetes, which caused him to lose more than 30 pounds during the season. Now that his condition is under control, Cutler seems poised to have a genuine breakout year.
At a time when former USC quarterback Matt Leinart and former Texas quarterback Vince Young are struggling to make the transition to a pro game that is far more demanding than their sheltered experiences in college, where they became top-10 prospects thanks to a throng of blue-chip talent surrounding them, Cutler's ability to tolerate and to overcome adversity at lowly Vanderbilt has served him well in the NFL. Frankly, the experiences of Leinart, Young, and Cutler should prompt scouts to re-examine carefully the question of whether a guy who becomes a celebrity on a stacked team has the right mindset to succeed at the next level.
Leinart and Young, who had it so easy when playing for free, don't know how to respond when it's not so easy anymore. In contrast, Cutler has continued to scratch and claw and he's already the best of the trio.
The presence of receiver Brandon Marshall (javascript:fantasyPopup('nfl', 7868)) doesn't hurt, either. Then there's rookie Eddie Royal (javascript:fantasyPopup('nfl', 8819)), who torched Oakland corner DeAngelo Hall without Marshall across the field to draw double coverage. Now that Marshall is back from a one-game suspension (he spent his time away living with Cutler), the Broncos could be getting ready to unveil the most potent three-man passing attack since Dan Marino was feeding Mark Clayton and Mark Duper.
Sure, there are questions in the running game. But it will instantly improve if opposing defenses are obsessed with shutting down Cutler and company.
Ditto for the Denver defense. The line has been shaky for several seasons now. But nothing spruces up a so-so defense more than an offense that can score on nearly every drive. That's precisely what the Broncos seem to have. And it could make a suddenly wide-open AFC field a lot more interesting.

I wasnt dare going to invoke such lofty praise but there it is..and there Florio is throwing himself at the altar of Mike Shanahan. Its shocking to see this. I guess the bandwagon wasnt full enough already.
