http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/09/09/merriman-out-for-the-year/

A league source tells us that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman is expected to miss the rest of the 2008 season with two torn ligaments in his knee.

We’re not yet reporting this as hard news. But given the identity of the source, we have no reason to doubt it at this point.

Merriman played in the Chargers’ season-opening loss to the Panthers.

Stay tuned for more.

Chris Mortenson is reporting it right now on Sportscenter as well. It's the smart thing to do in order to preserve his career IMO. I still don't understand why he didn't have surgery after the end of last season...he would already be back and ready to go for this season.

I hope he continues to play, I was really excited to see him injure himself bad enough to end his career. I know that sounds evil but I really despise him and his seizure dance he does

I agree. And bad new for the Broncos this week. Merry Man didn't do shit against the Panthers.

Finally this guy came to his senses. Get healthy...then come back to your former self. Don't risk further injury and prolong the issue. The guy is one of the most dominant players in the NFL and he's going to risk his career...that tells me all I need to know about the Chargers Organization.

Whatever...I don't know how he ever thought he'd be able to get through the season with two torn ligaments...

He did get in the backfield but the one play Tucker was in was a sack. Does Jay ***EDIT*** like the taste of field?

Jyles Tucker...if you guys think it's safe because we don't have Merriman, you're wrong. The bolts brought him in for one play where he pressured Delhomme enough to force him forward and run into Philips for the only sack of the game. Cutler will be treated to that as well. Sally?

Wow Sally, you talk so big for such a young thing! Nobody was saying it was safe without Merriman, didn't you read the thread? Calm down... there, there... it's all right. See? It's all good. :D Just breathe in, breathe out.

Yep, sounds real bad.

Anyway, glad he opted to go this route. It sounded like if he wound up with a serious re-injury, it could be career threatening, so this way, he misses a year (and next week), and still has a lot of time in his career left.

Guy is a complete moron. What they are reporting on the radio here in San Diego is that he was told by no less than four specialists that he needed this surgery and he opted to play instead.

It definitely speaks volumes about the Charger's organization to allow that to happen as well. How do you let your best defensive player tear his knee up, be told that he must have this surgery, then allow him back on the field to potentially end his career.

Sounds to me like a whole band of retards.

i appreciate some of the remarks. Shawne decided that after the first game he really couldnt be shawne. for those who think they know, shawne was told by doctors he needed surgery. none of the doctors told him he needed it right away. so thats why he decided to try to play. I did understand his decision to try to give it a go, but glad he decided to shut it down. this weekend now gives you guys a bit more momentum. the game is still going to be interesting to see how our defense responds. They did well with merriman out couple years ago, so I expect the same this year. Cant wait to get there friday. Still gunna have a great time!

I also read that at least one of the ligaments was originally damaged in college and he had been playing with it since then.

It was a selfish decision that was ego driven. Could have caused permanent damage to his knee that might have made him a less effective player or cost him his career. I am sure, ALL FOUR orthopedic surgeons informed him of this.

I'm surprised to hear he hurt it again in last years play offs . Was told then he needed surgery.. I'd have done it THEN and played some later this year when they are going to need him down the stretch..

He hurt it in the tennessee game when dude cheap shotted him. Like I said, none of the docs told him he had to have surgery that minute which he took as he thought he could play through it like last year.

BS. No surgeon on this planet would take the risk of being liable for not telling him to get it done instead of playing.

Simple reality is this, this knee was injured LAST season. Period. He could've had the surgery when the Chargers dreams of ever seeing a Lombardi were once again dashed, and he would be on the field this weekend.

Now, since he was selfish and stupid, he won't be.

the injury wasnt as severe as last year. thats why when he went in to check up on it, everyone was shocked he tore another CL. So he figured if we was able to play with that same pain as last year, that he would try to play with it this year.

Again, I call BS. No surgeon on this planet would make that call with the millions in liability.

Nice try though.

Oh...believe me they told him to sit. They told him top have surgery after New England, and they even told him to sit out the year and get that surgery. But when a player that special says, "I know I can play so I want to," the organization just takes a few steps back and plays the waiting game. Thankfully the organization did pull the strings and it's a lights out! for him...too bad. We could've really used him this year. Oh well Tucker will prove to be something special, just not dominant like Merriman.

If an organization does that then it is a crappy organization. There's no way around that.

The situation is a black eye on the Chargers and shines a bright spotlight on the idiocy of Merriman himself.

SAN DIEGO -- Star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman pulled the plug on his 2008 season on Tuesday when he told the San Diego Chargers he'll have surgery on the two torn ligaments in his left knee.

They let him play a game and then he joined the consensus that it just wouldn't be smart. It's like letting your kid try that pistaccio ice cream. You know he'll hate it and give it up.

Yeah, let him risk ending his career first to teach him a lesson. :D

It's no secret that the Chargers are not too interested in extending Merriman's contract, and they're already grooming his replacement. That's probably why they didn't really care if he got a career ending injury; they were most likely more focussed on using him to get to the superbowl, as they think this is their year.

Can a single person come to a consensus? I realize I am not as erudite as your typical Dolt fan, but this one has me scratching my head.

My standing question remains: do the Dolts forums really suck so bad that they have to come here to enjoy themselves? What the heck?

Okay, so, when my daughter developed an allergy to strawberries that made her skin puffy and red and made her throat swell, and having a short memory as 5 year olds do, I was just supposed to let her eat more whenever she asked just to reinforce with her that she is allergic? Interesting, though I found it worked to simply remind her that strawberries made her sick. Maybe that is just me though, you know, wanting to keep my kid from getting sick.

Don't know if the kid's allergic to pistaccio. gotta find out. Merriman wasn't ready to play. It's over. We've got biggerthings to worry about as in an overly hyped Bronco team.
As for the person who asked if I'm bored -what do you think? I'm stuck in my dorm room all day and night and over there it's all "I agree, the D needs to play better" the whole time. So yes I come over here to entertain myself.

A little smack never hurt anyone. As far as I'm concerned, you're welcome here. I hate your team, and I think that your secondary is extremely overrated, but hey we all have different opinions.

P.S. Cutler is going to make SD's D his b*tch.

I'm sorry. I just have no respect for someone who comes on the opposing teams board to talk sh*t. Especially when they have domintated the division the last few years. Oh! The Broncos (It's a double standard. if you can call em Sparklers I should be allowed to call em Donkies) ARE overhyped but they're still freaking scary. They can still beat the Chargers and yeah, I said it! they will take it down to the end and come out with a win. Problem is I think the regular season will kill the Broncos while the Chargers always fare well with the other teams. Finally, someone is gonna challenge our bid for the AFC West title. Dude, I don't think whoever wins this game wins the division, but if Denver gets a 2 game lead, they have a very good chance. A very weak schedule (which just got weaker when Brady went down) especially in the 2nd half of the season bodes well for Denver. The Chargers on the other hand, have some tough games ahead. Let's compare the 2 teams schedules

Chargers
at Broncos
vs Jets
at Raiders
at Dolphins
vs Patriots
at Bills
at Saints
Bye
vs Chiefs
at Steelers
vs Colts
vs Falcons
vs Raiders
at Chiefs
at Buccaneers
vs Broncos

Not exactly an easy schedule, the one advantage is a lot of home games in the 2nd half, but you also play the Bucs and Steelers and both are on the road.

Broncos
vs Chargers
vs Saints
at Chiefs
vs Buccaneers
vs Jaguars
at Patriots
bye
vs Dolphins
at Cleveland
at Falcons
vs Raiders
at Jets
vs Chiefs
at Panthers
vs Bills
at Chargers

Denver's 2nd half toughest opponents are Browns, Panthers, Bills, Jets and of course Chargers. 4 of those 5 games are on the road unfortunately, but all of those teams, are teams that Denver can beat.

This divison is up for grabs, regardless of what happens on Sunday, but I think if Denver gets a 2 game lead that the Chargers will be in a rough spot and although we think they're a good team, I wonder how they'll do when they face adversity.
