ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Ted Cottrell knows his time is running out.

Jay Cutler is close to becoming an impact NFL quarterback. Cottrell, the defensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers, has been expecting this time to come for a couple years and he isn't excited about it.

"Jay Cutler is about to become a star in this league," Cottrell said. "I know it's coming. You could see it last year. He is a good, smart, young quarterback who can be a star for a long time. He is a guy we are going to have to worry about."

Chargers star linebacker Shawne Merriman agrees. He knows Cutler's on the cusp of great things in Denver and that the Chargers will have to focus on him.

"Jay has a big arm, and he knows what to do with it," Merriman said. "They will figure out a great system for him and it will work out. The guy is capable."

Because of his capability, Cutler, who was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, is the clear candidate in the AFC West to be a breakout star in 2008. Cutler, 25, was the 11th overall pick in the 2006 draft after the Broncos traded up five spots to take him. Cutler took over for veteran Jake Plummer with five games remaining in his rookie season and he started every game last season.

The Vanderbilt product is only 9-12 in his 21 NFL starts, but he has showed steady improvement. And thus far he has been a better pro quarterback than Vince Young -- who isn't the passer Cutler is but who has proved he can win in the NFL -- and Matt Leinart, the two quarterbacks who were selected ahead of him in his draft class.

Despite suffering the effects of his diabetes, which was undiagnosed at the time, Cutler threw for 3,497 yards and 20 touchdowns last season and completed 63.6 percent of his passes. Cutler threw 14 interceptions last season and has thrown 19 picks in 21 games. Reducing his interceptions is something Cutler, Denver coach Mike Shanahan and passing game coordinator Jeremy Bates worked on extensively this offseason. In addition to cutting down on the mistakes, the Broncos want to see Cutler take the next step in his career.

That means the team expects Cutler to carry the Broncos on his back at times. Great quarterbacks can overcome when their team is sluggish, either on offense or defense. Cutler, who has showed an ability to play very well in the fourth quarter and in overtime, thus far has been unable to win games by himself. The Broncos want to see that change. Shanahan believes his quarterback is ready to add that ability to his repertoire.

"I think everybody knows that with a quarterback it takes some time for them to feel comfortable with the system, feel comfortable with the terminology and with what the defenses are throwing at you on a day-to-day basis," Shanahan said. "All the reps that you are able to get over a two-, three-year time frame is something that you need. … Jay has been doing a very good job."

Cutler, who has a knack for not getting overly excited about much, has been confident this summer about his position in Denver. He knows he's the future of the team, which has slipped to a 16-16 record the past two years after advancing to the AFC Championship Game in Plummer's final full season as the Broncos' starter. The job of being the Denver Broncos' quarterback, arguably the most pressure-packed job in the state, in the shadow of John Elway, isn't too big for Cutler.

"Every year is a new year, and everyone comes in with a clean slate," Cutler said. "We feel good about where we are at. We are just going to take it day by day, practice by practice and hopefully during the season we are where we want to be."

Cutler and the team are confident his disease will not get in his way. Cutler was diagnosed with the most serious form of diabetes in April. He will take insulin shots several times a day every day for the rest of his life. Cutler has regained almost all of the 33 pounds he lost last season. He looked very good in training camp and his patented velocity on passes is back. Cutler has been diligent in dealing with the disease and doesn't foresee any issues.

"Once I hit the field, I am not really thinking about it. I have a monitor that monitors my blood sugar every minute," Cutler said. "I know all the information I need to know about it. Obviously it is an ongoing struggle every day just keeping the levels where I want them. We are doing a great job with my food and my insulin intakes. It has went well so far."

Cutler's teammates know that the time is now for their quarterback to evolve into a Pro Bowl player. But he will do it on his terms, they say.

"The one thing I love about Jay, after being around quarterbacks during my career, he has a quiet confidence, and I love that about him," Denver veteran cornerback Dre Bly said. "He's not going to do a bunch of talking about it. He is not going to be jabbering to a lot of people. He does his talking with his play, and I love that about Jay. I think he is ready to go this year. He is ready to do good things and get this team back at the top of the AFC West."

That's what worries Cottrell.

No prob. Btw, lot of classy fans in that board. They objectively appreciate Cutler as a player, despite him not being a Titan.

Scouts Inc.: Cutler's maturity is starting to show

After diving into preseason game film over the last few days, one of the most impressive players I've seen is Broncos QB Jay Cutler. You've heard it before: Don't get caught up in glorified exhibition performances, especially those at quarterback.

But I believe Cutler is poised for a monster year, despite a questionable supporting cast and even without early contributions from go-to WR Brandon Marshall (three-game suspension).

One of the most difficult tasks in our business is evaluating and projecting the pro potential of college quarterbacks. The casual fan may see only subtle variations, but offensive systems in college are completely different from those in the NFL.

It's very difficult to implement a detailed system in college, where the amount of time a coach can spend with a player is restricted. In any given week, an NFL offensive game plan contains volumes of information and diagrams that can expand into subsets of more info.

On a single play, a quarterback is asked to process and repeat in the huddle 10-25 words of verbiage. Maybe more, depending on the play selection. And don't forget protection schemes, which a quarterback also must know and understand. There are reasons it takes so much time for quarterbacks to develop in the pros.

With a big-time arm and the ability to attack all levels of a defense, Cutler's physical tools are exactly what NFL coaches want in a quarterback. He processes quickly at the line of scrimmage, is natural in his drops and delivers with good rhythm and timing -- a critical element in coach Mike Shanahan's attack.

Cutler shows very good poise, with the instincts and ability to both move around in the pocket and attack the edges of a defense. He has a very live arm and creates excellent spin on the ball when throwing on the move. He can find receivers off their landmarks when protection breaks down. Bottom line: The combination of Cutler's mobility and arm puts tremendous pressure on the back end of a defense.

And now, headed into his third NFL season, Cutler seems to be getting a handle on the mental aspects of his position. He's ready to take the next step, from managing games to lifting the Broncos on his shoulders and winning games himself.

Again, it's the preseason, but what I've seen on tape suggests tremendous growth. Cutler is making better, quicker reads. He's looking off coverage, avoiding telegraphing throws, recognizing and attacking the blitz. Young quarterbacks typically make strides in these areas through film work: analyzing past performances, studying similar offenses and other greats at the position, and researching coverage concepts of upcoming opponents. Cutler's offseason work habits are paying dividends.

And I spotted something else: the return of Denver's drop-back passing attack. By drafting LT Ryan Clady in the first round, Shanahan seems to be reinventing the John Elway-Gary Zimmerman formula that worked so well for him in the past. Protection issues forced the Broncos to keep Cutler on the move a lot in his first two seasons, but Shanahan's offense typically is built on five- and seven-step passing drops, deep routes and play-action. In Cutler and Clady, the Broncos finally have the players to pull it off.

Denver still has, in my opinion, some concerns on defense and at certain offensive skill positions. But for the first time since Elway retired, the one thing Broncos fans can count on is a franchise quarterback to build around. And in the NFL, it doesn't get much better than that.

Thanks, Omac.

I do wish these writers would also recognize Ryan Harris. He has also been kicking butt.

Yes Cutler has been over looked by the league in general. so far. I thing his presents will be unavoidable this year. The o-line is better then I thought they would be, at else so far. The questionable skill position has to be running back.

In general I feel better about this year then any year since '98.

It may not be completely objective--after all, Cutler did go to college in Nashville. Still, I completely agree with you that every encounter I've had with Titans fans has been positive. Great set of fans they have in Tennessee.

In fact, I'd probably put up a dozen names, and some backups, I'd rather drop into the QB spot, before calling on Cutler....

Yeah, I read those too. I'm just glad he wasn't a Bronco fan; I wouldn't want him representing us when debating against other fans. :D
