Open mic: In-com-plete get passing grade?
Three syllables are causing some controversy in Broncos Web Nation. If you've been to a Broncos home game, you know them well.
In-com-plete.
There is concern among some Broncos fans that the "in-com-plete" chant will no longer be led by the public address announcer at Invesco Field at Mile.
Several Web sites, including www.saveincomplete.com are soliciting season ticket-holders to petition the Broncos to retain the "in-com-plete" chant that follows every errant pass from the opposing quarterback.
When he took the job as the Broncos' new P.A. announcer last month, Alan Roach was non-committal toward continuing what Alan Cass began at Mile High Stadium in the mid-1990s.
Roach replaces Cass, who retired after 20 seasons.
Cass first bellowed the "in-com-plete" cadence during a game against Kansas City. It caught on with fans and has carried over has a signature cheer at Invesco Field at Mile High.
After an opposing quarterback misfired on a throw, Cass would say, "The pass is . . ." Fans would finish with "in-com-plete" while the syllables unfolded on the stadium scoreboard.
In an e-mail, Broncos season ticket-holder David wrote, "I have watched that chant become a staple of Broncos home games and it's one of the only things we do at INVESCO that originated at Mile High.
"As someone who has been to other stadiums, I know you can attest to the uniqueness of this tradition. Some stadiums have a 'first down' chant (such as Arrowhead), while places like Lambeau have the 'Go-Pack-Go.'
"All of them are meant for one thing, the enjoyment and involvement of the fans at the game, and each of them are meant to be unique. And that describes IN-COM-PLETE to a tee."
Roach did not return my calls on Friday. He was in Arizona, working as the sideline reporter during 850 KOA's broadcast of the Broncos-Cardinals exhibition game.
Last year Roach gave up his duties as P.A. announcer for the Rockies at Coors Field. He still is announcer for the Avalanche games at Pepsi Center.
Certainly there are much more important issues than a harmless taunt from 76,000 fans. But we are talking about the Broncos and their fans.
Opposing QBs may find the "in-com-plete" chant to be annoying after every errant throw. For that matter, some fans at the game may find it annoying too.
If the P.A. announcer doesn't want to lead the cheer, fine. The Broncos still should post "in-com-plete" on the scoreboard and let the paying fans continue to have their fun.
