Unless I missed it, we don't have a gameday thread. It might be game four of the pre-season, but it's still a Broncos game.

So, here it is.

This is more of a position and depth game more than anything. Should be a snoozer, but will be fun watching some back-ups and see if anybody stands out for any particular reason.

Yeah, but it's football :D

It will be interesting to see how the young DL do against the cards starting unit. I hope Moss and Crowder can show something...Barret too.

Moss should be shown the door and not occupying a roster spot if he don't contribute this year. I wonder if he will ever show up with the big boys and play some football for us.

This should be a good game to watch. We've got roughly around 20 guys who will be packing their bags this weekend. Who's going to step up and make the team?

Will Kern win the punting job.

Will our 2nd and 3rd string defense be able to stop the Cardinals 1st string offense?

I want to see guys like Hillis, Larsen, Barrett, Moss, Crowder, Polumbus, Lichtensteiger etc.

I think Hillis has the potential to be a really good player for Denver for a long time. He can run the ball, obviously catch the ball, and helped McFadden and Jones run up some pretty big numbers.

A lot of people right after the draft laughed at those of us that cheared this 7th round pick.

So, does Hackney win the number two spot, resulting in Ramsey being cut and Shanny going back to his two QB ways, saving a roster spot for Colbert or someone like that? Making it easier to carry Torrain?

Right now, I don't think the Broncos have a team where they can plug in a backup QB and run off a bunch of wins.

I have been on the record since draft time (give or take), saying I thought the Broncos would be a playoff team this year, but I also think it is Cutler or bust. In another year or so, hopefully the running game will become dominant enough (again) that we can stick a replacement in and still win games, but I don't think we are there yet.

So, I hate to waste a roster spot on a QB, when it probably doesn't matter.

Oh, I agree completely. If Cutler gets hurt, the season is over.

I would rather see DH as the backup QB. But I doubt that Shanny feels the same way.

Agreed, but then I hope he releases or moves to PS (not sure if he still qualifies) Hackney, because I don't think keeping three QBs on this team makes sense. In a year or two, maybe it will.

The thing is, it's like teams are catching on that if they want to get a 1st down, throw towards Foxy. The Cowboys did that to get a long gain, then a TD I think, and now the Cardinals did exactly the same thing. What's going to happen is, teams will keep it in their back pocket, then when they need it, they'll go after Foxy and get their 1st down or TD.

If Foxy doesn't get more aggressive, he'll be too much of a liability on defense.

He's made a couple of short completions. And he's over thrown or forced a few throws on intermediate routes. But he has a strong arm that's for sure.

They actually looked pretty good at the start of the game; shooting the gaps, etc. The problem is when Leinart came in and found out he had tons of time to throw. Then it was attack Foxworth. Paymah too, but not as much.

Nothing wrong with our rush defense, even on 2nd team. Our problem with both 1st and 2nd teamers this offseason is the pass rush. We need either Moss or Crowder to step up and become the DEs Bates thought they could be.

Well, that's where you're wrong. Arizona played majority of their 1st teamers in the 1st half, specialy the 1st quarter. The only guy they didn't really play was Edge, who hasn't really been lighting it up anyway. Hightower's been running pretty tough this offseason. The rush defense is easily much improved from last season.

On the pass rush, we just need someone on the other side of Dumerville, and Moss definitely hasn't been the answer yet. We haven't been using blitzes much, so maybe that can help during the regular season. We will get burned, that's why I think NO will beat us, but we'll have a better shot at SD, who's receiving corps and QB I'm not too impressed with.

Shouldn't Leinart be out there right now?

The guy needs as many game reps as he can since he'll be riding the pine awaiting a Kurt Warner injury.

I said what I saw of it.. which I should have qualified I finally found a link on Justin TV about 1:56 left in the first half..

BTW it is not hard to improve on how bad it was last year..

Hackney plays with lots of composure. And that TD pass was strong, yet he didn't even have time to set up. He has a strong arm, and good pocket sense.

Alridge, Martinez, Larsen, Paulescu, and Prater have all looked impressive tonight. Paulescu is great on his "touch" punts and Prater is booming his kicks even at lower altitude.

TD Colbert! Nice play by Hackney there, although Hackney has been pretty meh most of the night. Hackney still looks better than Ramsey IMO, but we are screwed if we have to rely on either of them for an extended period of time.

to be sure, that play was a gem. strong throw, yet a very quick throw (had to be)... I did see a bit of dancing earlier. Then again, lot to be said when you can be confident in your oline.

Yep, Hackney doesn't have very good patience in the pocket and often panics even when he doesn't have to.

True, but I think that there are plenty of backup QBs that are better than the guys we have. There are definitely worse ones though, so I shouldn't complain too much.

Hackney reminds me of Tarvaris Jackson, with his arm strength and mobility, only with much more composure and makes much better decisions. Minnesota should get him and they'll have an upgraded Tarvaris.

Nah, he doesn't panick. He knows how to throw the ball away or even take a sack. He doesn't really make much stupid mistakes. He's just more comfortable going out of the pocket; not very patient, but not mistake prone either. Can't say the same thing for Ramsey.

No thanks. He's got the arm, but the knock against him is his brains ... reading defenses, composure ....

This is just an editorial, but I've read similar things just googling his name on the web ....

http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2008/01/23/morellis_eastwest_game_exposed.aspx

This game, however, was nothing new for Joe Pa's "unsung hero," and just reinforced what most realistic Penn State fans came to terms with since Michael Robinson left: Morelli has the arm of Peyton Manning but the brain of the Scarecrow.

omac
08-30-2008, 12:42 AM
and another on Morelli ....

http://mvn.com/nfl-draft/2008/02/14/scouting-report-anthony-morelli-qb-penn-state/

Pros: Has a great arm and vision.

Cons: He cannot read defenses or blitzes, but that could be because he was never taught too well.

Check out what a reader commented too, even more negative reviews ....

If Woodyard doesn't make this team I'm gonna firebomb Dove Valley.

And can I just say that I would HATE to cut Hillis and hope to shove him on the practice squad? We might still do it, but that will not make me happy.

Loved seeing the continuous effort from the backups tonight, against starters or backups. They played with fire.

Since somebody pissed all over our defensive fire last year it's good to see.
