As a big numbers and stats guy, I love the PFR blog (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/). For a while, he's been going through each division doing an all-time team for each, but never got to Denver. After slightly changing his formula, he posted the whole AFC (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/?p=586) in one day, including Denver.

Here is Denver's team. What do you all think of this?

Denver Broncos

QB John Elway 138
RB Terrell Davis 73
RB Floyd Little 69
RC Rod Smith 102
RC Shannon Sharpe 92
RC Riley Odoms 75
RC Ed McCaffrey 58
T Ken Lanier 62
T Matt Lepsis 62
G Paul Howard 48
G Dan Neil 42
C Tom Nalen 84

DT Rubin Carter 74
DT Trevor Pryce 65
DE Barney Chavous 73
DE Rulon Jones 64
ILB Randy Gradishar 92
ILB Karl Mecklenburg 91
OLB Tom Jackson 87
OLB Simon Fletcher 62
CB Louis Wright 95
CB Champ Bailey 54
S Bill Thompson 85
S Steve Atwater 79

RC = Receiver. For historical purposes, he lumped them all together.

If you want to know more about what the numbers mean, read his blog posts, but it's a pretty slick formula, and relatively accurate.

Ummm He is missing Upchurch and a slew of O-lineman, most conspicuously a hall of famer. And wher is Dennis Smith?

Good list but I agree atwater27, where is Zim and Upchurch? Also, a couple of players look like they are listed out of position.

I'd also suggest consideration for:
WR - Lionel Taylor
OG - Keith Bishop
OG - Mark Schlereth
DE - Lyle Alzado
DT- Greg Kragen
K - Jason Elam
P - Tom Rouen
PR - Rick Upchurch

Not a horrible list but the fact that Stinky isnt on there is a huge disappointment.

Yeah, it's arguable in some ways, but they're all Broncos so it's hard to debate-but yes, Zimm, Schlereth, Bob Swenson, Claudie Minor perhaps over "Big Dog" Lanier by a slight margin at right tackle...

I forgot about Claudie Minor, he was good, Tony Jones is worth consideration as well.

Of course, such a list is very subjective. Moreover, there is not room to
include every deserving player. With that in mind, after following the Broncos
as an avid fan for the last 48 years, here is my list:

Denver Broncos

QB John Elway
RB Terrell Davis
RB Floyd Little
WR Rod Smith
WR Lionel Taylor
TE Shannon Sharpe
T Claude Minor
T Gary Zimmerman
G Paul Howard
G Keith Bishop
C Tom Nalen

DT Dave Costa
DT Trevor Pryce
DE Rich Jackson
DE Rulon Jones
ILB Randy Gradishar
ILB Karl Mecklenburg
OLB Tom Jackson
OLB Simon Fletcher
CB Louis Wright
CB Champ Bailey
S Billy Thompson
S Steve Atwater
PR Rick Upchurch
K Jason Elam
P Billy Van Heusen

I'll even present my argument for the Broncos who were G.O.A.T.:
John Elway
Champ Bailey
Shannon Sharpe (if I want to ignore John Mackey)

Glad this generated some discussion.

In response, this is not meant to be a subjective list, rather an objective list. A formula is used to essentially see how much better than league average a player is while he played for a certain team. So Zim probably isn't there because he didn't play enough, and perhaps D. Smith didn't make it because he wasn't as far above league average for enough years statistically. The list might not be 100% correct, but at least it's consistent.

Truthfully, I was most surprised to see Lionel Taylor missing. I bet Tombstone Jackson might have been on it too if he played longer.

An excellent list. My personal preference is Dennis Smith over Atwater and I don't remembe Costa. If you value the big hit, over coverage I can see how Atwater could be on the list.

I had a tough time between Dennis Smith and Atwater, and you may well
be right. Whichever one of them makes the list, however, Thompson stays.
He was, as they would say today, a beast!

And what is REALLY sad - out of all of these GREAT players, we have ONLY TWO HOF's :tsk:

Wonder if they went any further back the '67?
