Here's my quick collection of Veikune links:

The Broncos have cut LB Jarvis Moss, who had been their 1st-round pick in the 2007 Draft. In his four season with Denver, Moss tallied 29 tackles, 3.5 sacks and pass defensed in 34 games (29 starts). According to the Denver Post, the Broncos have signed LB David Veikune to replace Moss on the 53-man roster. Veikune had been a 2nd-round pick (52nd overall) out of Hawaii by the Cleveland Browns in 2009. Veikune was cut by the Browns on September 7th, 2010.

According to Andrew Mason of MaxDenver.com, Broncos LB Robert Ayers is expected to practice today. Ayers has missed Denver's last four games with a fractured foot.

Denver traded picks number 21, 86 and 198 of the 2007 Draft in exchange for the ability to select Moss 17th overall. Moss had played a key role in helping the Florida Gators to the BCS National Championship only months earlier but never found sustained success in Denver.

Veikune looks to be more versatile than Moss. Also a couple of years younger. I think the big appeal may have been the fact that David can play inside or outside linebacker. Moss was stuck in a crunch of hybrid pass rush specialists with Ayers, Dumervil, Hunter, etc. Plus he is as dumb as dirt.

Great point, Robert. Veikune reportedly scored a 28 (http://life.atlantafalcons.com/topic/3842550-wonderlic-scores/) on the Wonderlic, which is a score better than the average offensive tackle earns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonderlic_Test).

I guess I forgot all the draft picks Shanny spent on getting Moss.
Me thinks the McD bashers might want to quell their angst surrounding his picks. Hmmmm?

I loved Veikune when he played in Hawaii. The guy plays and hits hard. And he's a pretty good pass rusher from inside or outside LB spots. Even though he didn't pan out in Cleveland, I'm hoping he pans out in Denver. He's a better overall linebacker than Moss ever was.

Me thinks McDaniels wasn't hired to bring us more of the same. Hmmmm?

And Ryan Clady scored a 13. The wonderlic score may be the most overrated score in sports.

Not necessarily. The players aren't playing in hand me downs over on the empty lot on the corner . Plays aren't "run to the tire and I'll hitcha". Its a vital Supplement that is used in Addition to what makes the player. All brawn and no brains makes for a short NFL career.

This kid was good in college. I hope he steps in and brings something good and new to the team.

love this pickup. . . i thought he was over-drafted, but the kid has talent. . . sitting well below .500, i've been impatiently waiting for us to churn the roster a bit-- just no point hanging onto a guy like moss who was useless, and gone at the end of the season anyway. . . it just makes sense to get a jump on next year if there's a player out there with some potential upside who can be acquired on the cheap-- low risk, high reward moves. . .

i wish we would've cut le kevin worthless smith and brought in jarron gilbert-- he has a ton of potential as a disruptive five-technique, i'm not a bit surprised that the jets wanted him. . . i'd love to cut maroney and sign james davis from the redskins practice squad. . .

i have no idea whether veikune can stick on the roster past this year or not, but at least he has a chance-- i'm far happier giving him a shot than watching moss continue to waste our money at the end of the bench when he's not losing games with stupid special teams penalties. . .

Le Kevin Smith was cut a week ago when the Broncos signed Daniel Coats - then the next day, Lance Ball was promoted and Coats cut...

Which leaves an empty roster spot and a question as to why even bother signing Coats in the first place. I'm all  Is there a Paul Harvey "Rest of the Story" to this story?

No, there's no extra roster spot.

Monday: Sign Coats/Cut The Kevin
Tuesday: Sign Ball from PS/Cut Coats
Today: Sign Veikune/Cut Moss

All paired transactions.

As you can see above, there is no extra roster spot. The reason Ball was moved up from the practice squad is that it appeared the Colts were about to sign him. So, McD decided he wanted Ball around for the future and wasn't concerned much about Coats.

the moves we are maikng mid-season outside of maroney this year are solid, the FA's at the beginning suck, but the moves to get hunter/vickerson/veikune/move ball to the 53 and even gronkowski were solid....Gronkowski now has become our top TE, well outplaying graham and quinn, although quinn did have his best blocking game agains the chiefs....so even though the phonz trade stings a bit, we got a mid rd draft pick and a legit Well balanced starting TE.....so its not as bad as some think because phonz was never gonna have 5 INt's here, he just would not beat out champ, goodman, or cox and maybe even Squid.....

And i'm sure he does, but with the roster limit, sometimes you have to pick your poison. Obviously he felt that Ball was more important to the future of this club than Coats.

well, that would seem pretty basic-- which would YOU rather be without, your balls or your coat?

Its about time we got a white Linebacker. Its awesome that he has the long hair flowing. Hopefully he can come in and play inspired football and be our clay matthews :)
