DENVER – For a third consecutive week, the Broncos will play without five injured defenders.

Thursday morning, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels ruled out defensive end Kevin Vickerson and cornerback Perrish Cox. The day before, he said that safety Darcel McBath and linebackers Robert Ayers and Wesley Woodyard would each miss a third consecutive game with ankle, foot and hamstring injuries, respectively.

None of the hurting quintet will travel to London with the team. Each will continue to receive treatment while their teammates are away.

Cox, who suffered a concussion in the third quarter against Oakland, said he struggled with headaches in recent days, and wore sunglasses inside the locker room on Tuesday and Wednesday to help mitigate the effect of the headaches.

McDANIELS REFUTED REPORTS that Ayers would remain sidelined for two to three months with a foot injury, saying that the reported timetable was “likely incorrect.”

“I look forward to having him back in the near future,” McDaniels said.

EDDIE ROYAL DID NOT PRACTICE TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY, but the third-year wide receiver — with an appropriate surname for the Broncos’ destination — will travel to London, raising hopes that he would be available Sunday.

“We’re hopeful that everybody that’s going is able to play in the game, no question,” McDaniels said.

Royal played last week in spite of only seeing limited work in the Friday session after suffering a groin injury in the second half of the 24-20 loss to the New York Jets on Oct. 17.

KNOWSHON MORENO WAS NOT ON WEDNESDAY’S INJURY REPORT, even though he pulled up early in practice and walked to head athletic trainer Steve Antonopoulos, gesturing to his right hamstring.

McDaniels said Moreno “will be fine” — which is especially crucial to the Broncos now, since McDaniels said the running game will become more Moreno-centric, with the second-year back playing more on third downs and catching more passes out of the backfield.

VICKERSON’S INJURY forced the Broncos to turn to Le Kevin Smith, whom they released before the start of the regular season but re-signed on Tuesday. Smith will almost certainly be active, and his familiarity with the Broncos’ scheme is likely his best asset.

“He knows what we’re doing and he got work here the last couple of days and he’ll get more work today and have a walkthrough tomorrow,” McDaniels said. “It’s the normal week for a guy that you pick up early in the week and give him a chance to learn the game plan.

“He doesn’t have to learn the rest of our playbook if he doesn’t know it, but Le Kevin is pretty much caught up on all that.”

It's a good thing the 49'ers have a weak receivers corps, otherwise losing Cox could be devastating.
