3rd Down's A Charm For The Broncos

DENVER, CO. (Vic Lombardi, CBS4) ― On X-BOX maybe, but not in the NFL.

A 70-percent conversion rate? On third down?

Nobody converts 70-percent of their third downs in this league. But that's exactly what Kyle Orton and the Broncos did against Seattle on Sunday. It was the 4th best third down percentage in the NFL in the last 20 years. They did it by getting big chunks on first and second downs, leaving them with many manageable third and shorts. Heck, at one point they were 14-of-17 on third down. That's how confident this offense is right now. Crazy thing is, they did it without much of a running game. Broncos ran the ball 38 times for a less-than-stellar 1.7 yards a pop. You can get away with it against the Seahawks, but I shudder to think what that number may look like against the Ravens or Jets.

Thankfully, Kyle Orton remains one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the league. And he's got a band of receivers that make his job a whole lot easier. Eddie Royal is starting to get the Royal Treatment again. He caught five passes on Sunday, including a 34-yard trick play that brought back memories of Royal's rookie debut in Oakland two years ago.

How about Demaryius Thomas? The kid did not take a single snap in the preseason. He was inactive for the opener in Jacksonville. And all he does is catch a game-high 8 passes for 97 yards. Did you see him explode up the field on that bubble-screen? It was 3rd and 14. He got 19. Thomas is going to be a favorite target for Orton because he's so darn big. He's Brandon Marshall big. Difference is, he's faster than Marshall. In fact, the Broncos claim he's the fastest player on the team, which is downright scary for a guy who goes 6-3, 230.

I'm anxious to see what the Broncos do against Indy next week. Hopefully, Chris Kuper and Ryan Harris return to the lineup. They desperately need to upgrade that offensive line or they may never get the running game going. Just imagine how much more effective Orton can be if he could bank on his backs getting 4-5 yards a carry.

I can tell you this. If the Broncos convert 70-percent of their third downs against the Colts, they'll be 2-and-1. Guaranteed.

if the backs could get 4-5 yds a carry orton would never have to throw the ball :salute:
