I'd say this is probably the best "bad news" that we've had for a while.

He'll drop the weight, and be back starting at RG.

OL Holland's weight keeps him out
By Lindsay H. Jones
The Denver Post

Mike Shanahan, during the first day of training camp Friday afternoon. (THE DENVER POST | ANDY CROSS)Starting right guard Montrae Holland was held out of Friday's first practice because he showed up at training camp overweight.

Instead of working out with the team, Holland spent several hours of one-on-one time with strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten, running and pushing a sled on a separate practice field.

"I didn't make weight," Holland said. "I'll be back in a few days."

Holland is listed at 6-foot-2, 322 pounds, weighing more than any offensive lineman except rookie left tackle Ryan Clady, who is 6-foot-6.

"We're not going to have him practice until he gets back to his reporting weight," coach Mike Shanahan said.

With Holland out, Chris Kuper practiced for the first time at right guard, with Ryan Harris at right tackle. Kuper and Harris are expected to battle for the starting job at tackle.

Veteran center Tom Nalen was back with the first-team offense. Nalen, entering his 15th season, had his left knee scoped during mini-camp in early June. With Rod Smith's official retirement on Thursday, Nalen is the only remaining player from the Broncos' two Super Bowl championship teams.

Cutler being monitored

Quarterback Jay Cutler opened camp wearing a new blood sugar monitor strapped to his upper left arm. The monitor feeds a signal to head athletic trainer Steve Antonopulos every minute.

"He (Antonopulos) just walks by me and tells me where I'm at," Cutler said.

Cutler, diagnosed with Type I diabetes in the offseason, is not wearing an insulin pump during practice.

"When it gets really hot out it gets a little sticky and I don't like messing with it," Cutler said.

No sleep till Dove Valley

Clady's agent Pat Dye and Broncos officials worked until the wee hours of Friday morning to finalize the contract for the team's first round draft pick.

The five-year deal with a maximum of $17.5 million with about $11 million guaranteed, was completed around 4:30 a.m., which was when Clady said he received a text message from Dye. "I slept a lot better after that," Clady said.

Rookie tackle out for the year

Rookie defensive tackle Carlton Powell will miss the season after injuring his right Achilles tendon during conditioning work earlier this month. "His Achilles popped," Shanahan said. "Obviously he's out for the year." Powell, the team's second fifth-round pick, signed with the team on July 8, with a signing bonus of about $180,000. Powell will be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

WR Shepherd injured

Wide receiver Edell Shepherd injured his left knee late in the morning session and did not practice in the afternoon. A team spokesman said the injury is still being evaluated. Shepherd is in his first season with the Broncos. He was cut from Detroit after training camp last season, but previously played for Houston and Tampa Bay. Before hurting his knee Friday, Shepherd made one of the prettiest catches of the morning session on a deep pass from quarterback Darrell Hackney.

Mike Bell trying out

Running back Mike Bell, released by the Broncos on Monday, will get a tryout with the New England Patriots.

The article doesn't say "how much" overweight. If he's 20 lbs. over its a real issue. If he's just 5 or so it aint no biggie he just needs to do more push aways (from the training table) and sweat it off...

would love to know how much is "over".

I suspect if it were huge they would have him not sledding so much and in the weight room and conditioning inside..

To much strain on the body just causes OTHER issues such as a heart attack..

They said he was over by about eight pounts. This isn't that big of a deal, he'll get down to weight. Kuper, Clady and Harris are all on the field and I'm lovin' it.

Apparently, Kuper broke his hand, but should be able to play through it.

Was at camp today, and they had Holland, Along with one of the strength and conditioning coaches. Holland was pushing some wooden sled from the north to south side of this practice field. The coach would push it back. He(Holland) looked extremely tired and very sluggish. I watched him do this for about 20 mins..Up and back down. This coach was an older guy for sure and was doing it twice as quick as Holland. It was just the two of them. Whilst the entire rest of the time was on the 2nd field practicing. He look pissed...Was interesting to watch.

Well, that's true. One can condition and bulk himself all he wants, but a bone
is still a bone, and cartilages are still cartilages. If a joint is forced in the way
it was not designed to go, something is going to give.

I'm just cursing the damned luck . . .

Your reports must be different than Kaylors, Montrose, 24Champbailey and the rest of the guys from this site and from the Mane that have been at camp.
Pretty much all of those guys say he has been owned.

Please go read them yourself.

If you have different reports I'd like very much to see them. So would the rest of us I'm sure.

Posted this yesterday.

Ryan Harris bounced back and had a great day during offensive line versus defensive line one-on-ones. Harris was a roadblock for oncoming defenders and even stopped Elvis Dumervil who had made it by Ryan Clady earlier in practice.

Like who? Kuper? Hopefully he wins out at RT because Harris sucks as of right now. Holland was probably our best and easily our most consistent OL last year. Let's give him a chance to get back in there before we give his job to a scrub.

You do know the title "Best player on the offensive line last year" is like saying, "The best disease you could catch is Ebola". It means nothing. I eventually hope a young player can take over from Holland.

Whether you want to admit it or not, Holland played well last year on a line that was in shambles. Holland is 28, and should have several good years left. Who, on the current roster, other than Kuper (who might end up playing RT, or maybe even LG if Hamilton takes one to the head) would you rather have "take over" for him, right now? I'd love to have this stud young player to take over for him, but that player isn't on the roster yet.

A young player taking over the position can come through the draft you know.

No doubt, hence me saying that player isn't on the roster yet, but we weren't talking about draft picks or the future. I was answering your original statement of "Hopefully we give somebody more deserving the chance to play RG" which would imply that somebody more deserving is currently there to play RG. Had you said, "....more deserving to play RG in THE FUTURE." I would have agreed.

Many OLINE guys go into their mid to late 30's before being over the hill..

I think he he plays like he did last year and we get improved action from the eh ORT and more consistent play at Center his play overall will still grade out high..

If we can come up with his replacement in a few years 4-6 all the better but ORG is not high on my list of problems at this time..

I have much deeper concerns for the senior citizen at Center and the OLG what has been the term most oft used to describe his pass protect "being on roller skates" That has me more than worried..

Holland is in his mid 30s? Hes only 27, Still a fairly young player. He did play well last year and with a year in the system im sure he will make a push for the starting spot again. Harris is going to be the RT though. Kuper may have to kick over to LG.

I hope not. Harris is pretty terrible as of this moment. We'll see how the rest of camp and preseason goes. We have yet to see what Kuper can do at RT.

I have not seen any post in this thread stating he is in his 30's. Everyone has said he can play well into his 30's that he is indeed young.

SO you may want to edit your post for accuracy..

Holland trying to shed weight to get back on field

Jul 28, 2008

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (Map, News) - Broncos offensive lineman Montrae Holland knows he's dropping farther behind with every practice he misses.

Still, he's trying to take a sensible approach to his mandated weight loss.

"I don't want to pass out, not be hydrated," Holland said. "I want to do it the right way."

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said Holland won't practice with the team until he slims down. His listed weight on the roster is 322 pounds and Shanahan has said Holland is 20-25 pounds overweight.

Holland is working out with strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten while his teammates toil through training camp. He ventured out Monday to watch his teammates go through drills.

"It's very hard to watch, see my teammates out there going through camp and I'm over here trying to do what I should've done myself," said Holland, who started all 16 games at right guard for Denver last season.

Holland declined to say how much he weighed when he reported or even what he's tipping the scales at now. He said he has a "little bit more" to go before he can get back on the field.

"It's nobody else's fault but my own," Holland said. "I'll keep going and keep dropping ... I'm already behind."

Chris Kuper is making the most of the opportunity, even with a fractured finger in his right hand that will require him to wear a club cast for up to six weeks. He's been taking most of the reps at Holland's spot.

Holland doesn't think Shanahan holding him out of practice is heavy-handed punishment for him reporting to camp heavy.

"If it is, it ain't doing nothin' but getting me better," Holland said.

Maybe , coming to camp over weight might help him out. while he is trying to lose this extra weight. He has been pushing that dam sled for hours every day. This has to be making him stronger, and helping his stamina and this might even help him with his run blocking skills,
