What are your reactions to this not so wonderful news? I think this absolutely sucks! I was hoping he could contribute this year. I wonder if he's out for the season...

So what's the recovery time on this? Is this the same type achilles injury that Stokely had...that one took a full season. :tsk:

It'd depend on the severity. If it's ruptured, he's screwed. If it's strained, he could sit out a week or two and probably be fine.

PUP isn't IR.

I'll worry about it later.

Patriots have 15 players on the PUP list. It just means he wont be partcipating early in training camp. So we can add another body in camp and see what they can do. Im guessing he will be activated late in the pre season or early in the regular season.

Looks like a wasted pick if you ask me. There's no guarentees that he'll come back the same guy...and when and if he does...he'll be a rookie all over again.

Bad news...very bad news!

He may or may not have contributed this year anyway. I'm not happy about it, but it's not like it's Doom either.

Rookie Powell out for season
Broncos rookie defensive tackle Carlton Powell will miss the season with a torn Achilles tendon. Powell had been designated to the team's physically unable to perform (PUP) list to open training camp.

When asked after Friday's morning practice why Powell had been moved, coach Mike Shanahan said Powell had suffered the injury in closed conditioning workouts.

By league rules teams have to designate players who cannot take the field for training camp practices, so teams across the league designate players for the PUP just before they practice for the first time.

Powell is the only player the Broncos have designated for PUP so far. Powell will be moved to injured reserve at the start of the season.

Powell was the Broncos' fifth-round selection in this past April's draft.

I'm sure I'm confused but I thought that if you were on the PUP list that you COULDN'T come back until after week 6 or something.

But maybe that's just if you're on PUP when the regular season starts. .. Yeah, I think that is right. Anybody know for sure?

Merging in 3...2...1......I thought this warrented its own post. We were already thin at DT...now Powell is out for the season. Hopefully he comes back at 100% next year.

1. A player on the PUP does not count against the active roster.
2. A player on the PUP can not practice with the team, but can rehab privately and attend team meetings.
3. A player on the PUP can be activated at any time during training camp.
4. A player on the PUP will be strictly reserve until Week 6 once the season starts.
5. There's a 3 week window (Weeks 7-9) in which a player on the PUP can practice with the team. At the end of this window, the player must be activated or place on the PUP or IR for the remainder of the season.
6. A player can only be placed on the PUP before the start of training camp in most situations. The real rule is that a player can not be placed on the PUP after being listed on the Active Roster at any time after the first day of training camp.

You were right. I was wrong (I just didn't know it at the time).

Thanks, in the mean-time the real question was already answered I guess. If he goes on IR at the beginning of the season it is syunora (sp?) until next season.

That really, really sucks. He could have easily been the fourth guy on our roster. Something just happens every year. Players die, players get injured. We're cursed.

Anyone else thinking it's time to change the strength and conditioning coach? These injuries are an extention of last season, and it's happening to our young players.

I have a feeling it's that darn sled they call the beast.

Other teams don't have that, and they don't seem to get as injured as we do.

I have stated before that strength and conditioning does not seem to be working in DEN.

I think it goes beyond the beast maybe we need to be looking at tuten.. Who the is the beasts brain child..

Chillax guys, it's not like losing a rookie, second day pick DT is going to wreck our season. Sure it sucks to lose him but keep it in perspective!

Why was Powell not placed on the reserve/injured list
Question about Powell's possible return this year.

OK let me explain. Today wide receiver Edell Shepherd was placed on the reserve/injured list , with a torn ACL. They did this Because he will be gone for the year. Denver then resigned WR Taylor Jacobs . So if Powells injury will also make him miss the whole year , why have we not placed him on the reserve/injured list yet? This would allow us to sign other player. Instead they placed him on the PUP . Here are the difference in them . Am i missing something here?

Currently, the NFL's injured reserve rule restricts a player so designated from returning to play during the season that he's placed on the list. For further information on the rules concerning the contract status and compensation for injured players, see the Collective Bargaining Agreement (or CBA

A player who begins the season on the PUP list must sit out his team’s first six games. After that point, the player is allowed to practice with the team through Week 10 of the NFL season, and can be activated any time within that window. If the player is not activated by Week 10, he must stop practicing and is unavailable to be moved to the active roster for the remainder of the season.

Now i know people don't come back That fast from and injury like this I understand that but why Not place him on the reserve/injured list and free up a roster spot ? It seems like it would make since to bring in other DT at least for training camp ?

Yeah all these injuries look bad on him.

What's bad is there's so much more time for more injuries before the season starts. :D

Yeah, but we could've definitely used the depth. Plus, he'll play like a rookie next season.

Lonestar

think the most logical thought here is we now have though week 10 to make a decision he maybe well enough at that time to be activated or at that time put on IR..

One more spot on the roster for the next few weeks is not that Important if they hold hope he could be back and get some playing time.. So he is not a raw rookie again next year..

Now It sounds like he is not going to be able to perform for awhile . But I think he can set in on any meetings and probably even work out and condition the rest of his body as long as he stay off the leg in question or at least not put much pressure on it..

True, but Denver owes the Jets a conditional pick to the Jets for Robertson, the more DT's Denver has to put on the field the better the chances are of the Jets getting nothing......
