West Orange-Stark's Reggie Garrett dies.

BEAUMONT, Texas -- A hospital spokeswoman in eastern Texas says a high school quarterback has died after collapsing on the sideline during a game.

Memorial Hermann Baptist-Orange Hospital spokeswoman Mary Poole told The Associated Press that West-Orange Stark senior Reggie Garrett died at the Beaumont hospital about 9:30 p.m. Friday. She said no cause of death has been determined, and an autopsy was ordered.

The Beaumont Enterprise reports that Garrett collapsed on the sideline during the second quarter shortly after throwing his second touchdown of the game against Jasper.

Cornel Thompson, the defensive coordinator, told the Enterprise that he saw Garrett collapse, and he knew Garrett had a history of seizures, but not to what extent.

Fans clapped and shouted encouragement as medics took Garrett off the field, and the game resumed soon after medics put him in an ambulance.

The team found out during the fourth quarter that Garrett had passed away, according to reports.

Players, in tears, gathered at the 50-yard line after the game, consoling each other.

"Coaching this game for 40 years, it's really not that important is it, when something like this happens," West Orange Stark coach Dan Hooks told the Enterprise. "You talk about a great kid, friend, a teammate -- these kids all thought of him."
