Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has been burned before, but he has decided to touch the stove once again.
In this week's trade to acquire Laurence Maroney, McDaniels sent a fourth-round draft pick to his former team — the New England Patriots — for the oft-injured running back and a sixth-round pick.
Anyone curious about the potential value of a fourth-round pick? Think Elvis Dumervil, Brandon Marshall and Marcus Thomas over the last five Denver drafts alone. So this is no small deal if Maroney, a former first-round pick, isn't more productive than he was with the Patriots.
But McDaniels has tried this before. He shipped a fifth-round pick last year to the Patriots for defensive lineman Le Kevin Smith and a seventh-rounder in return.
Smith didn't play much in 2009, finishing with just 10 tackles. He didn't make this year's Denver roster out of training camp. The Broncos signed free agent Jarvis Green, another former Patriots defensive lineman, to a big contract that included $2.5 million in guaranteed money. Green took that with him when he didn't make this year's roster out of training camp.
Also last year, the Broncos sent a seventh-round pick to the Patriots for veteran offensive lineman Russ Hochstein. He's the Broncos' top backup at guard and center.
That deal notwithstanding, the moral of the story would seem to be that if McDaniels' former boss, Patriots coach Bill Belichick, is done with a player, the future production of that player appears to be limited at best.
Having studied at Belichick's side, McDaniels has to know the risk in the Maroney deal, because Belichick was certainly done with the running back. Maroney was in and out of the lineup with the Patriots — sometimes because of injuries, sometimes because of what many NFL scouts have called uninspired play.
Maroney has the talent of a first-round pick. But from 2006-09 with the Patriots, the former University of Minnesota

star from St. Louis topped 800 yards rushing in a season just once.
This year, he missed the Patriots' season opener because of a thigh injury. But the Broncos have been searching for help in the backfield since Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter left the same practice with injuries on the first day of training camp.
Moreno and Buckhalter played against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Denver's opener, a 24-17 loss for the Broncos. Behind a jumbled offensive line, Moreno had only two carries that gained more than 5 yards. He finished with 60 yards on 15 carries, including a 17-yard run. Buckhalter lost a fumble and finished with 15 yards on six carries. Jacksonville's Maurice Jones-Drew (98 yards) outrushed the Broncos (89).
The Broncos have to do a better job of protecting quarterback Kyle Orton, who was battered by Jacksonville's defense. They can do that by running the ball better.
Denver's trade for Maroney shows that McDaniels is hoping another player has something left in his tank when his former team didn't think so.

This is probably McD's only trade that I have liked. Or at least felt we didnt get ripped off.

Denver needed backfield help urgently. He knows the system and came cheap. Win win.

Really not a bad trade for a safety net that we really needed IMO.
I agree we have been burned a few times, but in this case, it was a decent trade. Hopefully it will pay off!
