CBS Sports analyst Shannon Sharpe has taken a leave of absence from the network's NFL TV coverage in the wake of a sexual assault allegation levied against him.

"I have decided to step aside from the (CBS') NFL Today until this matter is resolved," Sharpe said in a statement to Sports by Brooks.

A woman named Michelle Bundy acquired a restraining order against Sharpe in Georgia. Via the petition for the order, Bundy accused Sharpe of forcing her into sex and of threats on her life.

Sharpe has not been arrested or charged with a crime.

The protection order was granted, pending a hearing on Sept. 20.

"We accept Shannon's decision and decline to comment further on a pending legal matter," CBS Sports spokesperson LeslieAnne Wade told Sports by Brooks.

I fail to see what this has to do with him getting into the HOF.
I doubt the woman making the accusations cares about it.
Maybe I am not understanding what you have posted.

Weird, there's been a recent report of a reporter for the spanish network who is alleging harassment by some Jets players.

Definitely agree but even with that she shouldnt be subjected to any harassment of any kind. But, i would be the first to say something like that would be asking for trouble on any level.

It should not have anything to do with him getting into the HOF, but it could certainly muddy the waters.

I would be curious to know when the allegded incident happened. Recently or month, a year, two years ago?

If this is true then I am so disappointed in Shannon and really thougth he was better than this. Hopefully it is not true, but you don't go on "leave" if there's not something to it.:tsk:

I disagree. It's going to cause a shitstorm regardless if it's true or not and the NFL season just got into full swing. Being in the media spotlight at this time for something like this, can affect ratings of the program for CBS, regardless of Sharpe's guilt or innocence. Stepping aside while clearing up the situation is the best thing to do for both parties, again, regardless of guilt or innocence.

I sincerely hope it's not true. Shannon has been one of my favorite players for a long time. I'll be very disappointed if he did this.

This gal isn't just making an accusation..she filed for a restraining order against him..which doesn't make him guilty.

Seems most women usually just make the accusation...IMO he doesn't appear
to be the type to do something like this.

I wonder if this gal is an ex girlfriend and thing didn't go the way she wanted them to...hard telling.

Well I do not know about GA laws but FL you have to convince a judge or the states attorneys office that a restraining order is even needed. Something has happened to have one granted. CBS must have character clauses in their contracts, so this may have been forced on Sharpe. I hope it is not true, I like the pregame show and all the personalities. No way CBS is letting anyone that has been accused of something like this stay on air. If Sharpe is innocent boy I would be hooking up with an attorney.

I was watching First Take about this and they were saying she is a big flirt! She is known for letting players carry her around and her constantly touching them or doing stories ie on the biceps and she is touching them!

This was coming from a lady analyst and she said she brought this upon herself!! This looks like a case of "I can do onto you but you can't do the same to me" in other words the reporter who is crying wolf!!

As broncophan said hopefully not true, if it is he deserves a severe punishment! NTL, yes, HOF is pretty much under the rug for now!!

Off the field stuff has no bearing on the HOF vote (other than keeping people from voting for him out of principle). Heck, L. Taylor got voted in and he was a crack head.

Irvin was no saint either and he seemed pretty convincing at his induction that he was remorseful about his past so i doubt Shannon would be left out based on this allegation.

I hate everyone on the CBS halftime show. Marino, Esiason, Chowder, Sharpe, they all suck. James Brown is the only good one, but they stole him from Fox.

CBS football sucks.

Damn it, not what I expected from Shannon. Although, like someone else mentioned, innocent until proven guilty.

Pretty significant allegation though and something that shouldn't be taken lightly. Not sure what to think about this really.

I disagree that taking a leave is some sort of sign of guilt. If Sharpe truly assaulted or raped the woman, why did she not press the police to file charges rather than seek a restraining order?

Just as with most athletes, these charges often have two possibilities - either the man, feeling the sense of entitlement and privilege that are often pumped into athletes, forced himself on the woman against her will or the woman, sensing a chance to cash in and live on easy street, is seeking to blackmail the athlete on some alleged sexual misconduct when she seemed completely willing back when it happened.

You can flip a coin as to which is true. We all know there are men like that and we all know there are women like that. So, let the story play out and we'll see what happens.

Denver-area acquaintances of Michele Bundy were alarmed but not overly surprised upon hearing the news she has taken legal action against former Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe.

The Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta granted Bundy a temporary restraining order against Sharpe, who has taken a temporary leave of absence from his job as NFL analyst for CBS until the matter is resolved.

"My first reaction was: 'Oh, my God, this woman is trying to put the screws to this guy,' " Troy Holocker of Denver said. "Everyone knows this is a lie. This is what the woman went out to do. To hear this woman drag his name through the mud made me mad."

In the petition filed in the Fulton County court earlier this week, Bundy alleged that Sharpe threatened her life and forced her into sex. A protection order hearing has been set for Monday. Attempts to reach Bundy were unsuccessful. Sharpe has not been arrested or charged with a crime.

"She's been infatuated with Shannon Sharpe for years to the point I think she was kind of stalking him," Thayne Davis of Roxborough said. "She moved to Georgia to be closer to him. She has some insane idea in her head that he's going to be in a relationship with her."

Davis and his wife recently allowed Bundy and her daughter to live in their Roxborough home for a few months, until late-June. However, Davis said Bundy had overstayed her welcome at their home and was ordered to leave in late-June.

"We had to get the police to escort her out," Davis said. "She was fabricating stories against me too."

Davis said Bundy had lived in Denver for several years, including a stretch when she worked for a television station. Bundy met Sharpe, Davis said, during a time when she was granted media credentials to the Broncos' games and locker room at designated interview times. Davis said he occasionally accompanied Bundy as a photographer.

Bundy lived in New York for about five years, Davis said, then returned this year to the Denver area before recently moving to the Atlanta area.

"She sold everything she had, bought an RV and moved out to be close to Shannon Sharpe's house," Davis said.

Two things of note about this story:

1) This almost sounds like the Steve Phillips thing where media person gets involved with sports guy, might have even had sex together, and now she absolutely won't let go of it to the point of stalking the guy in a Fatal Attraction sort of way.

2) Like Phillips, the media seems to have no second thoughts about disclosing this woman's identity. If they thought she was truly the victim of sexual assault, they wouldn't be publishing her name. So they are, in effect, telling us they think she's lying.

I wouldn't be shocked at all if this woman had previously demanded money from him and he told her no so now she's trying to play the victim while trying to make him look like a cad.

After reading that story Carol posted. This woman is retaliating against Shannon it would seem.

Shannon stepping aside from his job is classy if it was his idea and smart business if it was CBS'.

Yes, charges have been dropped. From within the above link, I find the following rather strange:

"Michele Bundy, who was granted a temporary restraining order by the court against Sharpe earlier this week and has been representing herself, withdrew her complaint Wednesday."

She had been representing herself - oh really - if there was ANY truth to this, WHY would you WANT TO REPRESENT YOURSELF???????????

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/thehuddle/post/2010/09/cbs-sports-reinstates-shannon-sharpe-after-restraining-order-withdrawn/1

CBS Sports reinstated NFL analyst Shannon Sharpe on Thursday after a woman who had obtained an order of protection against him withdrew her complaint from a Georgia court.

"We are pleased that Shannon will be in his usual position with the NFL Today on Sunday," CBS spokesperson LeslieAnne Wade said in a statement, via Sports by Brooks.

Michelle Bundy had obtained an order of protection against Sharpe, which prompted him to take a leave of absence from CBS on Tuesday. Bundy had alleged that Sharpe made threats on her life and forced her to have sex, though he was not arrested or charged with a crime.

On Thursday, Sharpe released a statement about his return to active duty with CBS:

"I had every expectation that based on truth alone these claims would never reach a court. This issue was dismissed in its totality and no monies and no communications were exchanged. Now I look forward to getting to work."

The Denver Post spoke Thayne Davis, an acquaintance of Bundy who previously had her as a guest as his house, who told the paper Bundy had "insane" ideas about her relationship with Sharpe.
