Forget about the diabetes, the size of Jay Cutler's biceps or his agility in the pocket.

John Elway said Wednesday that whatever success the Broncos' offense has this season will have more to do with Cutler's mind than his body.

That's because Cutler, entering his third season — but first since being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes — should be at the point where he is comfortable enough to just play, Elway said as he prepared to play in this weekend's Colorado Open at the Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.

"Really, in the NFL it is all about reaction. After three years you are pretty comfortable with what goes on," Elway said. "I'm sure we'll see a lot better Jay Cutler than we have in the past."

Cutler started all 16 games in 2007 and five games in 2006, his rookie year. He threw for 3,497 yards and 20 touchdowns with 14 interceptions last season, but also lost 30 pounds because of the yet-undiagnosed diabetes. Cutler has since regained the weight and closely monitors his insulin levels.

It has now been a decade since Elway himself reported to training camp, as the current Broncos are doing today. Yet Elway can imagine how the players feel: excited, and eager to erase the memories of 2007's 7-9 record.

"They get to put that behind them and start again brand new, see what kind of football team you have and get going," Elway said.

Elway said he remembered how the start of training camp meant it was finally time to see how moves made in the offseason would pan out. For the 2008 Broncos, that means a team without former starters such as receiver Javon Walker, running back Travis Henry and linebacker Ian Gold.

"They got rid of some guys they probably needed to get rid of," Elway said. "They need those young guys to come through for them."

Those "young guys" include wide receiver Brandon Marshall and several players on defense.

Marshall was arrested on a battery charge in Atlanta in March, several weeks before he seriously injured his right forearm when he crashed into an entertainment center while wrestling with his brother. Marshall also is scheduled to go to trial on a DUI charge in September.

"The one thing that guys have to realize is that it is not a right to play in the NFL, it is a privilege," Elway said. "Brandon is obviously young. Hopefully he learns from it and realizes the situation he is in and the expectations the Broncos have of him, and that those types of things have to stop, and he has to concentrate on what goes on on the field."

The defense will also need to mature, Elway said.

"The guys they've drafted the last couple of rounds that they've got high hopes for, those are the guys that really have to come through," Elway said. "They've got to pan out like they thought they would."
