The Broncos have elected their team captains for the 2010 season. They have a whopping seven of them, which equates to more than 15 percent of the game-day roster.

The captains are cornerback Champ Bailey, safety Brian Dawkins, tight end Daniel Graham, offensive lineman Chris Kuper, quarterback Kyle Orton, linebacker D.J. Wiliams, and linebacker Wesley Woodyard.

In future years, we predict that the number of captains in Denver will expand from seven to 12. And that the term "captains" will be replaced with "apostles."

[Editor's note: I am a God-fearing Catholic with twelve years of parochial school and countless Sundays of attending Mass. These periodic jabs at Tim Tebow are intended only to be good-natured jokes. He's a good kid and we wish him well. Besides, we firmly believe that God has a sense of humor. How else can mankind explain the fart?]

Seven Broncos will help lead the team into 2010.

After a vote by their peers, Chris Kuper, Kyle Orton and Daniel Graham have been named offensive captains, Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins and D.J. Williams have been named defensive captains and Wesley Woodyard was voted special teams captain for the season.

It’s an honor Dawkins takes very seriously, and one that he said comes with plenty of responsibilities.

“Being able to answer tough questions when questions are asked, being able to stand up after tough losses and talk about things and being able to make the right decisions in tough, tough times,” the safety said. “(They are) not always the most popular decisions sometimes a leader has to make — you just have to be able to follow your heart and make the right decisions.”

Dawkins, Orton, Graham, Bailey and Woodyard were also captains last season. Bailey, Dawkins and Williams were 16-game starters in 2009.

“We are real proud of the group that will lead our team this year,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “We have talked before about the experience and the leadership and how valuable it is, but I think these guys do a phenomenal job — seven guys that we feel very comfortable with leading our football team. It’s a well-deserving group.”
