Welcome back. Today's question about the Broncos comes from Larry in New Hampshire.
Q: What can we expect to see Sunday at Jacksonville from rookie quarterback Tim Tebow?
A: Jacksonville is Tebow's hometown, so there will plenty of folks in the stands at what is now called EverBank Field. And being a former Florida star, Tebow is revered in that part of the country. He likely will get the biggest ovation of anyone in the stadium, despite playing for the Broncos in the Jaguars' home opener.
His role in Denver's offense, if any, won't be revealed until Sunday's game. But head coach Josh McDaniels and his brother, quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels, spent a lot of time in the offseason putting together a package of plays that feature Tebow. So if he's ready, look for Tebow to play as a change-of-pace QB in relief of veteran starter Kyle Orton.
The Broncos, as you would expect, didn't show any of those "Tebow package" plays in their four preseason games. But on Tuesday, McDaniels appeared to want the Jaguars to spend time thinking about Orton's backup — Tebow or Brady Quinn — getting some playing time Sunday. When asked to identify his No. 2 quarterback entering the season opener, McDaniels said, "We're not going to name one right now. We've got guys we like, we've said that, and we're going to continue to compete. Those two (Tebow and Quinn) are going to continue to compete and we'll try to make the decision of what's best on game day for our team, based on how we're going to play the game."
Tebow's health is the wild card in all of this. If his ribs have not healed enough to expose him to a fully stocked defense on a running play, it's unlikely the Broncos would make him the No. 2 quarterback for Sunday's game.
But Tebow, who is wearing plenty of padding on the injured area, looked better last week during the Broncos' preseason finale at Minnesota. They positioned the first-round draft pick and former Heisman Trophy winner as the No. 2 quarterback against the Vikings because Quinn had been struggling.
No other team's list of inactive players — declared 90 minutes before game time — will draw as much interest as the Broncos' list Sunday.
