Keep the good info coming like from last year, guys. You don't know how much we appreciate hearing from some of you. The stuff we get from our on the scene "reporters" beats the stuffing out of what we get from the Post.
Thanks so much, in advance.

I think you really ought to get your priorities straight. Sure it would be AWESOME to attend training camp.......and you would be roaming around Dove Valley like a Thanksgiving Day float gone mad. Sure you would see and hear our.....YOUR....... beloved Broncos players speeding around, joking around, back slappings sound, and crashing shoulder pads abound. Yes you would be like a five year old cut loose in the candy store. The high would be invigorating, stimulating, and saturating....................

..........but how could you go, attend camp, and then send a report back to us who are your very own, KNOWING, that your boss will be at work tapping his fingers along his desk top, thinking that, "Matt Wood isnt really sick...........Im absolutely SURE that hes at the Broncos training camp........." ?

As well, what about the added burden youre placing squarely on the shoulders of your fellow workers, due to your not being there to handle your load?

I think you really need to spend some time pondering these things with our confidant and friend............BUD. WISER you will be......................mmmm hmmmm.

I don't.

The NFL season is close, but not close enough.

I like when the first pre-season game is played, I get all pumped up and say I will watch every game of the season. Wait, I do watch nearly every game of the seasn already (I'm talking about games between all the teams, not just Bronco games).

DOVE VALLEY — Welcome to Training Camp, Broncos fans! Players reported here early this morning for physicals and a team meeting. The first practice is scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m.

A couple of notes to get started before players take the field:

First round draft pick Ryan Clady has signed, the team said this morning. Mike Klis was all over this story, read about it HERE.

Also, rookie defensive tackle Carlton Powell is on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of an injury to his Achilles tendon. Check back later for more details on that injury.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Clady signed a five-year deal worth $17.5 million, with $11.5 million in guaranteed money.

Curious though: The guy hasn't ever played a down in the NFL. Do you all really think this is a big loss? He was a 5th rounder...

Now, if it was Clady or Cutler or Champ, etc. I'd be a bit more concerned.

We're talking DTs here, Joe. The biggest hole the Broncos had. They already
had him penciled in as part of the rotation, as I understand.

Regarding Powell's draft position, who was it who just retired?

But the biggest point is, they hadn't even had a TC practice, and there's
a guy gone for the season . . .

I guess my point is, we've had a bunch of DT's in here that didn't pan out as well. Point is, we don't know if he would have (or will, for that matter) contributed. Just sayin. I don't view this as the end of the world.

And we don't know how many of the remaining players will pan out, either.
That is why the Broncos could least afford that loss.

And the fact such people as Rod are few and far in between is the reason we
can't lose these people, also. What if we had lost Rod? Mecklenburg? TD?

I am very upset over losing an untested player, especially one who had
negative rushing yardage against him in college. If it's Chad Mustard or
Mallard, okay. We know what we have there. But did we lose a star in
Powell, in a position of most desperate need?

Well, we certainly won't know this year, now . . .

three things bug me.

they say he's a tight end candidate, but he's small even for a wide receiver, which he is.

and 2nd, they say he was carted off in tears with the injury. why say 'in tears?' he might have torn his freaking ACL, and i don't blame him, but why say that?

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - With his diabetes and his passes both under control, quarterback Jay Cutler looked very impressive on the Denver Broncos' first workout of training camp.

His top target wasn't nearly so sharp.

Create A League Today!Brandon Marshall, whose offseason was marred by a serious arm injury, another run-in with the law and a summons to the commissioner's office, was gassed throughout the Friday morning workout, taking a knee after just about every route he ran.

When it was over, Marshall trudged off the practice fields with his right shoe in his hand, saying he couldn't stop to speak with reporters because he had to go see a doctor.

Was he OK?

"Oh, yeah," Marshall said before slipping into team headquarters.

He was mostly quiet on the field, too.

"I think he's a little out of shape," Cutler said. "I mean, he needs to run a little bit. But he caught the ball well and he's physical. I'm excited to see him in a few weeks."

Cutler can only hope that he'll have Marshall, a third-year star who's coming off a breakout season, full-time in 2008.

Commissioner Roger Goodell is pondering punishment for the enigmatic 24-year-old wide receiver, who has been arrested three times in the last year and is due in court in September on a drunken driving charge.

The Broncos expect to hear back from the league about a possible suspension as early as next week.

"He's been through a lot this offseason," Cutler said. "To come out here and just not think about stuff and play football and do what he loves, I mean that's good."

Marshall missed most of the team's offseason workouts after a freak accident that landed him in the operating room for surgery on his right arm and called into question his maturity level again.

"It's time for me to grow up," Marshall said afterward, pledging to be a better citizen and teammate.

Marshall, a fourth-round draft choice in 2006 out of Central Florida, blossomed into the Broncos' best receiver last year, catching 102 passes for 1,325 yards and seven touchdowns.

"I knew he would be fine. He said his hand was fine and he caught a few one-handed on the right arm," Cutler said. "He looked good."

Observers were more impressed with Cutler.

"He's controlling the diabetes," coach Mike Shanahan said. "Obviously, he has a game plan. He's gained his weight back, the majority of his weight, and he looks good."

The third-year pro lost 35 pounds and some zip on his throws last season but neither he nor the Broncos heeded warning signs, including constant fatigue and unexplained weight loss, until team medical personnel noticed a high blood sugar reading in routine tests in March and sent him to a diabetes specialist.

Now, his blood sugars are down, his weight and spirits are up and his famous fastballs are back.

He ditched his insulin pump for practice but had a new glucometer on his left arm that provided constant readings. Occasionally, he came to the sideline for finger ****** to test his blood sugars.

"I feel good. I don't really think about it, but I have Greek (head athletic trainer Steve Antonopulos) and he has all my stuff and he checks it and makes sure I am OK. If I need a Gatorade, they get me some Gatorade. Once I hit the field, I am not really thinking about it.

"I have a monitor that monitors my blood sugar every minute. Greek just walks by me and tells me where I am at. If I am feeling OK, then I feel OK. I do have a pump, but when it gets really hot out it gets a little sticky and I don't like messing with it."

Cutler said he's confident his strength and stamina won't wane like they did in 2007.

"Last year my body just wasn't reacting," he said. "I didn't know if I was going to make it to the end of the season to tell you the truth, but this year I am at the weight I kind of want to be at and I'll maybe gain a little bit more through camp."

Cutler had another reason to smile Friday: massive rookie left tackle Ryan Clady, the Boise State star who was the 12th player selected in the draft, signed a five-year deal with $11 million in guarantees just in time to start protecting Cutler's blind side from the start of training camp.

EXTRA POINTS: Shanahan said rookie DT Carlton Powell of Virginia Tech is out for the year with a torn Achilles' tendon that occurred during offseason conditioning. ... Free agent TE Edell Shepherd was carted off the field in tears after injuring his right knee. "He might have torn an ACL today, but I don't know," Shanahan said.

just asking what the hell is going on at Dove valley??

seems pretty clear to me that with the amount of season ending injuries over the past 4-5 years something is not right..

Sounds like the Broncos have known about the Powell injury for a while. The injury bug HAS been eating us alive the post couple years for sure. Every team loses players this time of year, I'm just hoping we don't lose any big names. It would be interesting to know if the Broncos are doing anything different with conditioning this year vs the last couple years to possibly try and prevent some of the injuries, or if it's "business as usual." I'm thinking about sending some Raid to Dove valley.

Here is the training camp report for Day 1 from 24ChampBailey over at the Mane.

Offense

Quarterbacks

Jay Cutler- Like most players on the first day, he was a tad rusty on his throws. One thing I noticed about Jay Cutler is his demeanor. He seems more cheerful around the guys and just happy to be playing out there. It's a good sign to see in a Quarterback. As far as his play, he can still zip the ball and seems to be working on his checkdowns which was one of his minor problems, he stared down on Marshall on at least 2 occasions. Overall not a bad day at all for Cutler.

Patrick Ramsey- Decent backup, tell you one thing if Jay goes down, god forbid, I feel really comfortable with him as our backup. It is his second year in the system and you can already tell he knows where to go etc. He also has a really good relationship with Jay, they both help each other out frequently. His play was adequate, like Cutler he was a bit rusty on his throws but I expect these two players to sharpen their skills as training camp goes on.

Darrell Hackney- Meh. I wasn't thoroughly impressed with his throws at all. His dump offs suck, one dump off where Selvin Young dropped it because it was a horrible throw. I would not be surprised if Shanahan goes with 2 quarterbacks or even brings in another QB for the third spot on the depth chart.

Running Backs-

Selvin Young- Right off the bat, you could tell he beefed up in the offseason. He has improved since last year, he can hit the hole and runs really well. He needs to work on catching the ball more, but I am going to chalk it up as rust. He will likely be the guy to start the season as the #1 Runningback.

Michael Pittman- Doesn't look old at all was my first impression of him. He can run through the holes with authority. I didn't see many mistakes from him, and he will make a strong case for some playing time at #2 or possibly even #1, though I doubt it with Selvin Young looking pretty good.

Ryan Torain- Got more snaps than I had expected. He has some quickness and can catch the ball. One problem though is he keeps running into walls and doesn't find the open hole. It's his first day on the job and he should get a lot better after getting some experience in the system.

Andre Hall- Has decent speed. He can run the ball effectively when he did. Didn't get a lot of snaps IMO to evaluate him.

Aldridge- Probably the most surprising RB, not that he is going to be a #1 guy but the fact nobody expects anything from him. He did quite well for his first impression in camp. I wouldn't be suprised he makes the team if he keeps improving. Going to be hard to do with all the depth we have at RB.

Payton Hillis- My first impression is ok, this guy is a rookie....well I was wrong. He sure doesn't look like one at FB. Instead, he looked like a veteran out there by knowing what to do. He can catch the ball, plow the road for a Running Back. He did it all. I would say he was the most impressive player in camp today.

Cecil Sapp- See above...time to look for a new job elsewhere. Seriously, he did ok, but not overtly impressive as Hillis. He has his work cut out for him with Hillis doing so well.

Wide Receivers

Brandon Marshall- Yes he did have a few drops, looked a little slow and rusty. He also had some pretty good catches. Clearly a fan favorite with people yelling out his name everytime he catches the ball. Like everyone else, he should improve as camp goes on. Like Oskie says, I'm a little more worried about his possible suspension.

Glenn Martinez- Wasn't expecting much from Martinez, but he did have some pretty impressive catches out there on the field. Didn't see many drops from him either. He is making a good case to be on the team with as many WRs we have on the team.

Eddie Royal- One word to describe him. SPEED. He can run like a gazelle. He made a few catches. The addition of Royal on the team seems to have added a new wrinkle to the playbook. Don't be surprised if you see reverses and Royal taking it to the house. He is going to be an exciting player for us. We ran a lot of reverses.

Darrell Jackson/Keary Colbert- Honestly, I didn't notice these guys on the field. Wasn't impressive nor was he making mistakes. Were overshadowed by Glenn Martinez and Marshall.

Brandon Stokely- Stokely was...Stokely. He made a couple catches that were impressive. Overall he seemed pretty decent. Didn't see a drop from him. Pretty much what you expect from Stokely.

Clifford Russell- Two Words...Camp Fodder. Least impressive WR out there.

Marquay McDaniel- Looks like camp fodder to me, but he did have a catch or two unlike Russell.

Tight Ends

Tony Scheffler- Caught the ball really well, I saw him drop the ball ONCE and he got extremely pissed at himself. It's like dude, one drop isn't the end of the world! Nice to see that he does have the expectations of catching every ball.

Nate Jackson- Did not get injured so it was a good day.
Seriously, he made a few catches and is definitely a player that likes to talk with anyone around him. I can see why Shanahan likes him, he keeps things loose with the players by cracking jokes etc.

Brett Pierce- It's a good thing they hand out the Roster info...I was wondering who the hell 84 was. He was average at best but camp fodder IMO.

Chad Mustard- CUT HIM! Just kidding Hotrod. Catching isn't his strong suit as we all know, it's going to be hard for him to make the squad.

Daniel Graham- He needs to work on his catching big time. I was watching him first thing in the morning when the tight ends were doing drills...and dropped a lot of balls. Yeah he is a blocking tight end but needs to work on catching as well.

Edell Sheppard- Was carted off the field, don't know exactly his status.

Offensive Line

First off, I admittedly didn't see the offensive line a whole lot, only if they made a mistake I would know who it was. Mostly paid attention to Clady, was interested to see if he was the real deal.

Ryan Clady- I'm not going to joke around with this guy. I was amazed at his size...dude is HUMONGOUS....rather he is a humongous dude that can move very well. He did ok with Dumervil, didn't get beat too often. He will improve as camp goes on. I am impressed with his demeanor, he led the team stretching out and did a little "sweet feet" dancing for everyone. As far as first impressions go, I think we found our franchise LT folks.

Erik Pears- Wasn't on his game today. He had at least one false start, was extremely pissed at himself for that one.

Tom Nalen- Was Tom Nalen.

Montrae Holland- Was TFTP....too fat to play.

Chris Kuper- Didn't see him make a mistake, so really I didn't notice him.

Ryan Harris- I didn't notice him either, but Oskie was saying he looked pretty good.

Ben Hamilton- I did watch him, he looks pretty good which is a good sign after all he has been through.

That's about it for the offense......

Defense

Defensive Line-

Dwayne Robertson- Like Brandon Marshall, he was a little rusty and slow most of the time. You can see some flashes where he can make a difference with pushing and quickness. Once again, he should improve as camp goes along.

Jarvis Moss- I'm pretty impressed with Jarvis, It appears he has fully recovered and is DETERMINED to make an impact on this squad. Was one of the last players to leave the field because after practice was over he went to work on his technique with the coaches.

Marcus Thomas- He can cause problems in the middle, he will be nice to have alongside Robertson. He did well on his drills and technique. So good first day for him.

Elvis Dumervil- Most interesting part of the day was that he was a quarterback during the defensive ends drill. Pretty amusing, and I have a picture of it. Dumervil still has that quickness and got by Clady a few times.

John Engleberger- Has a motor, but other than that...nothing special from what I saw of him.

Ekuban- Like Engleberger, nothing special. However he was one of the first players on the field. Probably an indication he wants to play football badly. Anyway these two players are going to be used as rotational players and depth.

Steven Harris- I don't know what to make of him, but I am going to say camp fodder but he was ok in drills and techniques.

Carl Powell- Heard he is done for the year, really unfortunate to hear.

Larry Birdine- Who you say? Yeah he is just a camp body.

Josh Mallard- Probably the smallest defensive tackle we have, yet he is effective with his will and technique was pretty good from what I heard from the coaches. His size isn't there, but seems to understand what he needs to do.

Kenny Peterson- Didn't notice him other than the drills and techniques. In the drills section of practice, they did the basic stuff and he was pretty nimble in the drills. Not sure what to make of him yet...

Linebackers-

Looking at the roster sheet...we have a crapload of LBers out there.

DJ Williams- He led the morning stretch alongside Jay Cutler, seemed to be in control and more comfortable at his weakside position. Which is good to see, he also moves to the ball quite well.

Niko Koutouvides- I hope I spelled his last name right, anyway he played on first team defense alongside DJ. He moves to the ball well, but heres the thing with today...theres wasn't much contact really. So it's hard to judge linebackers since their job is to tackle. I am a little concerned about the Mike position this year. I'm not sold on Niko at the position.

Nate Webster- I noticed he was on the field A LOT today, so I guess that can be construed as a good thing but he probably played a lot because he can play Mike and Strong side. Oh and his helmet didn't come off...so good day in all.

Manuel Padilla- Camp Fodder, or is he one of those international exemption guys?

Jamie Winborn- Didn't see him much today, but I believe he stopped Ryan Torain in his tracks. Also saw him on some special team drills later in the day, did fine in that area.

Larsen- Seems to me everyone has high hopes for this guy, I didn't see anything special from him. Maybe it was because it's his first day at camp or something...either way I will make note of him tomorrow.

Secondary

Champ Bailey- Picked off Jay Cutler...anyone surprised?

Dominique Foxworth- Definitely impressive, right up there with Hillis as one of the most impressive players in camp. He covered Marshall and Jackson VERY WELL and stepping up to swat away passes.

Karl Paymah- Not as impressive as Foxworth, but he was pretty good today. Covered his receivers quite well.

Dre "Remember Green Bay?" Bly- Disappointing day for him. He didn't cover well, actually I don't think he cared or was focused on his assignments. My feeling is that he doesn't care about practice. Cue the infamous Iverson comments...

JMFW- He didn't kill anyone today, so it was disappointing.

Seriously he did very well, he seems to know what his assignments were. Only missed one reciever once but chalk it up as a rookie mistake. He along with Moss stayed after practice to work on things.

John Lynch- He looked fine to me, I was more interested in seeing whether he lost his step or not. He isn't the fastest safety, but doesn't look to me like he lost his step at all. Age doesn't seem to be a factor.

Hamza- He was impressive. Very quick to the ball and covers adequately. Good first day for Hamza who has a lot of competition with other safeties.

Roderick Rogers- Didn't see much of him....looks like camp fodder to me.

Marquand Manuel- He was right in front of me during morning stretches...and that was the last I saw of him. That means he needs to step up if he wants to make the team. He was absent to me.

Josh Barrett- I thought he did OK for his first day, with safeties positioning and covering were their tasks, he did alright for covering. There wasn't a lot of deep balls thrown today when he was out there so thats a good sign.

Marlon McCree- Yeah some kid nearly cried because apparently the kid misses Mike Bell and McCree was wearing 20. The kid actually had a sign that said "BRING BACK MIKE BELL". Anyway, McCree looked pretty good out there. Hopefully we can get full contact soon, I want to see this guy hit somebody.

Special Teams-

One little tidbit on Special teams, it appears Brett Kern got most of the snaps at punter position late this afternoon. I was impressed at first that he kicked the ball well, but I wonder how much wind factored into carrying the ball far. Dre Bly got a chance to return some punts, as did Royal. Thing is there wasn't much emphasis on special teams from what I saw. No field goals, no kickoffs...just punting and 7 on 7 drills for offense and defense most of this afternoon.

Shepherd out for season
By Mike Klis
The Denver Post
Article Launched: 07/26/2008

In a year when training camp rosters have been reduced to 80 players, this isn't a good way to start.

Broncos' receiver Edell Shepherd, a five-year veteran with 13 career catches, is done for the season after tearing an ACL and hamstring during the team's first training-camp workout Friday morning.

To replace Shepherd, the Broncos are bringing back receiver Taylor Jacobs, who was on the team last season. At least Shepherd was able to make a brilliant catch on a sideline-and-go route before suffering his injury.

Broncos' rookie defensive tackle Carlton Powell Jr. didn't make it to the first practice. The fifth-round draft pick who received an $180,000 signing bonus tore his Achilles during a conditioning drill last week.

No wonder Shepherd was "crying" as he was being carted off the field. First of all, tearing your hammy and ACL at the same time can't feel too good and to top it off the dude probably knew that his dreams of playing in the NFL had just ended. I feel bad for the guy.

Kuper reportedly broke his hand, but is playing through the pain with a cast or something on. What a badass.

They said Clady is clearly kicking butt for a rookie.

Hillis is a stud. Showed his speed by taking a short pass, turning the corner and scoring down the sidelines. Made some blocks that were loud in practice..........Im gettin giddy about this country boy.

D. Jackson looks to be the number 2 WR if we started today. Consistent.

Royal has amazing ability, but his timing is off somewhat with Cutler. Went up to make an awesome catch in traffic that got the crowd going. Should get better as camp proceeds.

Stokes is Stokes.

Marshall snagged one in the endzone by reaching over Bly while BLy had perfect position.

Foxy has played very well.

The defensive line has looked well. Moss impressed in one on ones against the Oline. Robertson blew into the backfield a few times.

Scheff is the man.

Just some of the notes I remember.

On rotoworld, via Denver Post:

Jarvis Moss - DL Jul. 31 - 1:52 pm et

Broncos DE Jarvis Moss currently weighs only 245 pounds. His listed playing weight is 265.

Coming out of Florida, Moss was viewed as lean with an ideal frame to fill out, but he's been unable to keep weight on. He might be able to get away with it as a situational rusher, but probably not as a three-down starter.

Maybe Jarvis Moss should hang out with Montrae Holland more often......

Now THAT's funny! LOL!

Montrae could introduce him to his favorite foods!

"Now this is a big-mac with fries! And you can get it super-sized.

"Now over here on the right is my favorite pie store! And did you know that Italian restaurant on the corner does take-out? Can you say 'home cooked linguine?'"

Now let me introduce you to my favorite: Mrs. Field's cookies! Nobody does it any better than cookie-dough ice cream though! You get the ice-cream AND cookie dough right in one. No need to eat a tin of cookie dough and mix the two! Comes right in the carton mixed with the ice-cream!"
