Moreno to practice this week

In his postgame comments, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels indicated starting tailback Knowshon Moreno would practice this week. Moreno’s primary backup, Correll Buckhalter, returned to practice on a limited basis last week but did not play in the preseason game Sunday night against Pittsburgh.

It would be a surprise if Moreno, who has been out a month with a hamstring injury, played Thursday night in the preseason finale at Minnesota.

“I think that’s always best for a running back – same thing with (RB Correll Buckhalter) – to get hit before they actually go on to a regular-season game,” McDaniels said. “”But, if that’s not the best thing for us to do, the smartest decision to make, then we’ll probably hold off on that. We’re going to practice this week – we’ll be in pads on Tuesday and we’ll see if we can bang one or both of them around if they’re ready to go by then. We don’t have a timetable yet but both of them are getting close.”

Lance Ball cements roster spot?

He deserves it. Starting tailback Knowshon Moreno wasn’t exactly exploding off cuts during a pregame workout Sunday afternoon at Invesco Field, which is why the play of Lance Ball was so encouraging.

And I’m not even talking about Ball’s 75 yards rushing on 10 carries, although that didn’t hurt. More telling, perhaps, was Ball replaced LenDale White on every passing down with the first team offense _ an indication Ball has the trust of the coaching staff to pick up the pass rush.

Broncos D experimenting with 4-man front

The Broncos are — and will remain — primarily a 3-4 defense, but the team is experimenting with a four-man front.

In the first quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Steelers, the team showed a 4-3 look with its starters, against Pittsburgh’s first team. The four down linemen were Robert Ayers at right end, Justin Bannan and Jamal Williams at tackle, and Ryan McBean at right end. The three linebackers were Mario Haggan, D.J. Williams and Baraka Atkins.

The Steelers rushed for four yards on that play.

On the second-down snap, the Broncos were back into their normal 3-4 alignment
