Are you guys really worried about the Kicker position this year? It seems to me that Prater is going to be the guy and a good one. Dude has kicked 60 plus kicks during OTA's and has not missed one. Him and Jason Elam are friends and talk often. Jason Elam has high praise for Prater and says he has the strongest leg he has seen in a while. Prater says Elam and our S/T coach has just worked on his technique over the last year and thats the reason he has kicked 60 plus kicks without missing this off season so far. I dont think theres any competition for the Kicker spot. So with all that being said its still not game time pressure situation in OTAs other than when the coach does the countdowns. But yeah the question remains are you all worried about it? And if you dont think Prater is the guy then who? Oh and i forgot to mention hes great on kickoffs ( because we know Broncos had to waste an extra spot for a kickoff specialist) lately which is rediculous.

Broncos poised to enter season with untested kicker, punter

The Broncos will be living dangerously on special teams this season with an inexperienced tandem handling the punting and kicking duties. Matt Prater, who has played in four career games and is 1-for-4 on field-goal attempts, will be the team’s kicker. The punting battle is between Sam Paulescu, who is the favorite to win the job even though he has played in just one NFL game, and undrafted rookie Brett Kern. Their lack of experience is striking, but the Broncos have resisted the urge to add a veteran who could compete for a job, and sources say they seem to have a lot of faith that Prater and Paulescu won’t become major headaches. Prater missed the last few sessions of offseason workouts with a sore groin, but he told sources that he made every field-goal kick during the live portions of practice while he was healthy. We hear the groin problem shouldn't linger into training camp

I don't know why people keep thinking that the Broncos have typically kept three kickers. That's just not true. Typically they've only carried a FG kicker and a punter, with the punter handling the kickoffs.

As for Prater, he does have competition, Garrett Hartley. Hartley was pretty accurate in college, from what I understand. I don't know how strong his leg is though. Whoever wins the job, I won't be concerned about the kicking game until there's reason to be concerned. Why anticipate failure when it's only July and training camp hasn't even started? I would rather look forward to the kicker, whoever it turns out to be, getting the job done. Hopefully he'll be kicking more P.A.T.'s than field goals anyway.

Prater has always been a good kicker in practice. The problem is, he has always sucked when it counted. His success in OTA's means absolutely nothing. Go back and look at not only his numbers from the pros, but from college also. Until he does it when it counts, I don't trust his accuracy.

At least we know Hartley can do it in the crunch. Other than one bad year, he's been very consistent, and has a stronger than average leg.

The better kicker will suit up.

Practice ain't like in the game. We'll just have to wait and see. Of course, I hope the kicker end that season with a record of 31 for 31 field goals with 4 over 50 yards and 100% on extra points. That would be 63 extra points! WOW

Making kicks in OTA's and pressure situations are not the same. I am not necessarily 'worried' about the kicker, but I am realistic enough to realize that Elam has left us a little spoiled and used to seeing FG's go through the up-rights. Chances are, at least early on, Prater will not be as much of a sure thing when the pressure is on.

Shoulda drafted Crosby. RC's right on his OU boy Hartley though. I think he's the better kicker, and IMHO -- should beat out Prater. I'm find with either S.P. or B.K. at punter, they're both dope.

Okay so who made it cool to not read? Because i clearly said in my first post "So with all that being said its still not game time pressure situation in OTAs" So stop telling me as if im hyping him up over making them in practice. Duh i know its not the game and i said that. However anytime you make 60 kickz in a row your feeling good about yourself. Confidence is big in the NFL at any position exspecially kicker. Hartley ehhhh we will see. Too the guy who says Broncos didnt use 3 Kicking specialist? Your wrong because Prater was one of them last year. Prater was brung up to do kickoffs because our Punter was horrible at it and Elam was just too old to do it. So i dont know where you get the impression that Broncos didnt use Kickoff specialist last year. Up untill then Broncos were kicking the balls off to the 20-30 yard line which ws pathetic.

Yeah, it's become a pretty bad problem on this board. Too many people think they know it all and don't bother to actually read through and try to understand other people's points.

Who knows? Maybe Shanahan is thinking that if these 2 kickers don't work out, he can get one of the UFA next season. Here's the list:

Robbie Gould, UFA, Chicago Bears
Shayne Graham, UFA, Cincinnati Bengals
Jason Hanson, UFA, Detroit Lions
John Kasay, UFA, Carolina Panthers
Mike Nugent, UFA, New York Jets
Matt Stover, UFA, Baltimore Ravens

I agree with Dream, though, that he should have just drafted Crosby and we wouldn't be scrambling for a good kicker. Crosby can flat out boot it.

Look who doesn't read before posting. The Broncos do not typically use 3 kickers. Typically, they have used a FG kicker and a punter, with the punter handling the kickoffs. It is not typical for the Broncos to do what they did last year. Last year was not typical of what they do with the kickers. I hope I have said it in some way that you can understand that it is not typical for the Broncos to keep 3 kickers on the roster.

Dude i obviously read what you said to have responded to it. You telling me what we dont typically do 5 years ago means nothing. Because last year we actually DID IT. Im talkin about now and your talking about some shit from years ago. Now i hope ive said in in some way that YOU understand. Broncos had to have a freakin kickoff specialist last year because the guys we had doing it were kicking it to the 20 and 30 last year which is unacceptable. Do you get it yet?

For we as Broncos fans, it is going to take some getting used to in seeing another kicker take the field for us. I was curious to see what you all think of Matt Prater being our kicker for the upcoming season and who knows, maybe the next few years? I realize that he is 1-4 in his NFL career and that Denver is as hard as any an atmosphere to kick in. He does seem to have a pretty powerful leg and has been penciled in by a few to take the starting job. Elam is sure as heck one of the best in NFL history and is a lock for the HOF IMO. With that having been said. During a cold, biting, Colorado night in December, as the snow steadily falls at Mile High......Can Prater nail it through those uprights?

Casino, I did read your thread, But Im like yourself. ST are something I am looking forward to this year. I do believe you, like myself are High on our man Eddie Royal who I believe is going to be EXPLOSIVE in the return game. On the flip side though, Im looking forward to seeing Prater make the team as well. I actually met him a few weeks ago at the Fan Fare there at Invesco. He was a really nice guy who was very excited about his possibility of making the team. He had said that he feels very comfortable and Is looking forward to it......Didnt mean to rain on your parade. Just think we are on the same page.

It was announced on Monday that the team has released running back Mike Bell and kicker Garrett Hartley

So-- I guess we're handing Prater the job? Either that, or they plan on bringing in someone else to push him during camp... Is there another kicker on the roster now?

The job is pretty much Praters. He even said it in an interview that there was no real competition other than Hartley. And well they just released Hartley lol. I think Shanny has been washed up by him not missing a kick in OTAs. 60 plus kicks.

What that means, is camp hasn't even opened yet. And Prater has yet to kick in a 'real game' for denver. If he chokes, and Hartley/other kicker is out there, don't think for one minute Prater's job is secure.

That's what Confusious mean. :listen:
